Menswear will outperform the women’s clothing sector across the world by 2020, according to research by Euromonitor International. It is also rapidly transforming, in response to consumer demand and opportunities presented by new technologies. This is a fascinating time to be at the forefront of men’s fashion, and this course will set you up to lead the way. We have 65 years of experience teaching fashion under our belt and a stellar track record of producing the most innovative of graduates. The Fashion Design (Menswear) master's is an ambitious course, suited to those who want to pioneer within the fashion industry and gain an exciting career in menswear. This course will produce designers who are able to inspire and develop products with a high level of integrity and commercial value. You will also learn and develop an appreciation of the complexity of gender identities within a fashion context. Design courses at Northumbria are ranked within the UK top 10, and we are renowned for our pioneering and innovative course frameworks, which meet the demands of industry and produce graduates that are ready to step straight into employment. You will have coveted access to unrivalled industry links forged and maintained over six decades. Our global links include fashion companies such as H&M, Tommy Hilfiger, Abercrombie & Fitch and Barbour to name only a small sample. Your fashion design master’s with a specialism in Menswear will be underpinned by generic, research-led contextual modules. These will provide you with a grounding in research methods, creative thinking, cross-cultural communication, contemporary influences on design, reflective practice, innovation and entrepreneurship. This will be done through multidisciplinary and team-based collaboration.
You will graduate with the knowledge and expertise required to become a world-class designer, a design change-maker who can inspire and develop products with a high level of integrity and commercial value. Contemporary design practice is evolving due to new technologies and changing contexts of design innovation. This means there are more opportunities for graduates with advanced masterly understanding of how fashion and industrial design can collaborate in order to respond to future human and planet well-being. You will hold a critical awareness of current issues, an analytical knowledge of relevant craft skills, processes and technologies, and the entrepreneurial skills to evaluate and commercialise creative opportunities. Throughout the year, you will have the opportunity to engage in a range of events such as conferences and guest lectures to help further your knowledge and build networks towards your future career aspirations. In addition to working on your personal design projects, you will also have the chance to work on industry-led, collaborative projects within cross-disciplinary teams, reflecting the nature of your future work in the fashion industry. As well as supporting those seeking to develop independent fashion labels, this course will prepare you for a wide range of career opportunities within the fashion and creative industries and in roles as diverse as fashion designer, fashion director, stylist, buyer, account manager, visual merchandiser, fashion editor, industry commentator, or trend forecaster.
