The Interdepartmental Graduate Program in Biomolecular Science and Engineering (BMSE) has the fundamental goal of providing Ph.D. training and education at the interface between the biological and physical sciences. This goal fits into a larger context of meeting the critical needs for trained scientists who can work as effective members of interdisciplinary teams to solve important problems in the public and private sectors. The program offers an interdisciplinary Ph.D. emphasis in Bioengineering and Biomaterials. Students will elect an emphasis in either Biochemistry and Molecular Biology or Biophysics and Bioengineering. Given the increasing synergy between life sciences and engineering, particularly in areas of biotechnology and biomaterials, the time has come for the vigorous fusion of engineering and the basic molecular life sciences into a single curriculum. In this program barriers to interdisciplinary thinking, training and research at the interface between the life sciences, chemistry, physics and engineering have been removed.

TOEFL scores 630 Paper-Based Test (PBT), 109 Internet-Based Test (IBT) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Overall Band score of 7 or higher (if applicable)
Final/Official transcripts will be required for all applicants who are admitted and have indicated their intent to enroll at UC Santa Barbara by submitting a Statement of Intent to Register (SIR). UC Santa Barbara reserves the right to require official transcripts at any time during the admissions process, and rescind any offer of admission made if discrepancies between uploaded and official transcript(s) are found. The University and the Department require a B (3.0) minimum overall GPA from all college level coursework.
