Master of Fine Arts - Metalsmithing
關於課程
The Metalsmithing and Jewelry graduate program is a three-year, 60 credit course of study with a focus on creative studio practice and research. The first two years are marked by technical and conceptual exploration, critical investigation, and the cultivation of a creative approach that is relevant to each student?s intentions and sensibility. The third year is dedicated to the research and creation of a cohesive body of work, culminating in an MFA Thesis Exhibition held in the Gregory Allicar Museum of Art (formerly known as University Art Museum). A written thesis is also required to complete the requirements for the MFA degree. In addition to in-area studio work, the curriculum includes studio electives, art history coursework, graduate seminars, and non-art electives. Incoming graduate students must be technically proficient in order to successfully explore themes and approaches in order to further their own artistic, intellectual and philosophical investigations.
The Metalsmithing and Jewelry Area offers private studio space to graduate students, and 24-hour access to the main studios and equipment year-round. Individual artistic practice is both supported and challenged through an ongoing series of meetings and critiques. Students are expected to participate in weekly meetings, as well as to maintain a continuing dialog with the professor regarding the development of their own work. Critiques are held both within the metals area, and also with other graduate concentrations. A continuous exchange of ideas and critiques with a faculty Graduate Thesis Committee will also assist in defining and setting the pace of your personal advancement. There is also the option of engaging in other complementary studio work such as photography, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, painting, fibers, drawing, and electronic media.
