Due to its interdisciplinary nature, biomedical engineering attracts students with a variety of backgrounds. Thus, the requirements for admission are tailored to students who have a bachelor’s degree in an engineering, physical science, or biological science discipline, with adequate preparation in mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. The minimum course work requirements for admission are six quarters of calculus through linear algebra and ordinary differential equations, three quarters of calculus-based physics, three quarters of chemistry, and two quarters of biology. Students without a physics, chemistry, or engineering undergraduate degree may be required to take additional relevant engineering courses prior to joining the program, any such requirements will be specifically determined by the BME Graduate Committee on a case-by-case basis and will be made known to the applicant at the time of acceptance to the program.
High undergraduate GPA.
Competitive GRE quantitative reasoning score. Strong grades in undergraduate mathematics courses.
Good verbal and writing skills, as evidenced by competitive GRE analytical writing scores. Well-written and non-generic personal statement.
Relevant research experience. Evidence of meaningful research experience with tangible outcomes, such as research theses, papers, and participation in professional conferences/meetings. An authorship in a legitimate peer-reviewed journal publication carries significant weight.
At least three recommendation letters, with an enthusiastic endorsement from those familiar with the applicant’s skills and personal qualities. English language proficiency. Applicants whose primary language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency. Either TOEFL iBT or IELTS tests are accepted. Applicants who have taken Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) may use it as a substitute for GRE.
Exceptionally promising UCI undergraduates may apply for admission through The Henry Samueli School of Engineering’s accelerated M.S. and M.S./Ph.D. program, however, these students must satisfy the course work and letters of recommendation requirements described above. A minimum score of 250 on the computer-based TOEFL, or a minimum score of 94 on the TOEFL iBT, is required of all international students whose native language is not English. Students applying to Biomedical Engineering will be evaluated based on these TOEFL requirements, not on the minimum University standards. As an alternative to the TOEFL, you may submit scores from the Academic Modules of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).UC Irvine only accepts scores submitted electronically by the IELTS test center. No paper Test Report ForM.S. will be accepted. An overall minimum score of 7 for admission, with a score of no less than 6 on any individual module. A cumulative GPA of 3.20 during undergraduate study is recommended for admission into the Biomedical Engineering program.
