We train counseling psychologists based on the scientist/practitioner model of psychology. We integrate counseling and psychological theory, scientific inquiry, and supervised practice to facilitate the optimal development of individuals and groups in diverse settings, including counseling centers, school-based mental health, state and federal agencies, and universities.
The APA- accredited Ph.D. program in Counseling Psychology at Howard prepares students for careers as counseling psychologists who facilitate the optimal development of individuals and groups in a variety of settings, including but not limited to counseling centers, school-based mental health, state and federal agencies, community mental health centers, and universities. Our program is based on the scientist/practitioner model of professional psychology and integrates counseling and psychological theory, scientific inquiry, and supervised practice. A major emphasis of the program is the biological, affective, cognitive, racial-cultural, and social bases of behavior and training in diagnoses, assessment, and evidence-based clinical intervention. The program also emphasizes the prevention of psychological problems, teaching practical coping skills (to prevent problems), and developing effective problem-solving skills to remediate negative coping behaviors. You will benefit from the close mentorship of graduate faculty whose research work on mental health disparities, cross-cultural resilience factors in the process of recovery from traumatic injury, counseling and therapy with youth, multicultural counseling, co-occurring disorders, and psychometric assessment, has shaped the counseling profession. Our students have numerous opportunities to present their research findings at key meetings in and outside of the Washington, D.C. area including at meetings of the American Psychological Association, the Association of Black Psychologists, and the Annual Winter Roundtable at Teachers College-Columbia University.

Entry requirements for 霍華大學

Applicants must submit all credentials, along with their scores on the Graduate Record Examination Aptitude Test by December 15th. Admission (GPA, letters of recommendation, GRE scores, and personal statement and interview). Students are expected to adhere to the curriculum scheme and matriculate through the program as a cohort, except where course(s) have been waived. Portfolio Review (During the second semester of each year while enrolled in the program). The portfolio review is conducted annually by the Counseling Psychology Doctoral Faculty to evaluate students? adherence to program objectives and progress towards the degree. Comprehensive Examination (a 16-hour examination over 2 days). The Doctoral Comprehensive Examination is taken after the completion of course work or near completion of coursework, typically in the 4th year of the program. Students should apply for the Comprehensive Examination on the proper form through their academic advisor (using the Intent to Take the Preliminary / Comprehensive Examination form, Dissertation Proposal (approval of a proposal for dissertation research). A dissertation proposal is developed in conjunction with the student?s research advisor and three additional dissertation committee members. A fifth member (from outside the University) is assigned to the dissertation committee upon scheduling the Final Oral Examination of the dissertation. (Students must propose the dissertation before they are approved to apply for internship). Application for Admission to Candidacy. Students can be admitted to candidacy after (a) completing major course work, (b) passing the Comprehensive Examination, (c) satisfying the Expository Writing Examination requirement, and (e) having the dissertation proposal approved. Internship. A year-long internship at an APA-accredited facility. Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.00 for graduate
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) a score of 90 on the Internet base (IBT) is required for applicants whose native language is not English. Official TOEFL scores must be sent directly from ETS. The TOEFL test is only waived if the applicant has received a degree in the U.S. In lieu of the TOEFL (if not offered in your country), applicants may submit results from IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with an overall score of a 6.5.
