Why are we experiencing a prolonged cultural moment so permeated with dystopian, post-apocalyptic themes—and why do many works with these themes feature and target teenagers High-concept dystopian and post-apocalyptic novels have flooded the young adult market, while literary novelists writing for adults (Atwood, Mitchell, McCarthy, Ishiguro) spin similar stories. In this seminar, we will write and think broadly about genre boundaries and narrative structure, child and teenage readers, communal responses to disaster and trauma, utopian and dystopian rhetoric, the roles of speculative fiction in our culture, and the development of the notion of adolescence in America. We’ll explore what elements of the idea of the American teenager survive in books that narrate the dissolution of America or its aftermath, for comparison, we’ll also read several books set in post-apocalyptic or dystopian Britain, examine a Japanese film with interesting similarities to the popular Hunger Games series, and consider Duncan Jones’s Moon as a different sort of dystopian coming-of-age story. Some shorter texts will be available on Laulima.

We’ll also watch two films— Koushun Takami’s Battle Royale and Duncan Jones’s Moon—listen to some of Feed in audiobook form, and read additional essays, including works by Rebecca Solnit and James Berger.

Entry requirements for 休士頓大學淨湖分校

Applicants to the Ph.D. program must hold or expect to hold prior to matriculation a Master’s degree in English or a closely related field.At minimum, the applicant needs to demonstrate above average academic performance (B average, usually a 3.0 on a 1.0-4.0 scale) for undergraduate course work and for any post-baccalaureate or graduate course work.
Transcripts from each postsecondary institution you have attended. Unofficial copies are acceptable for the admissions application, but admitted students must submit official transcripts in order to enroll at UHM.
Certain applicants may be required to submit the following items:
o Residency Declaration Form
o Proof of sufficient funding (international students only)
o Official TOEFL or IELTS exam scores (international students only)
GRE scores. Only the General Test (verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing sections) is required. For applicants who hold degrees in fields other than English, taking the Subject Test in Literature (in addition to the General Test) is
advisable. Upload your Test Taker’s Score Report to the Supplemental Documents Upload Website, we will use this to expedite our review process while we wait for ETS to report your official scores.
A Statement of Objectives. In evaluating applications, we place a great deal of weight on the statement, which is your chance to give the admissions committee a clear sense of why you want a doctoral degree in English, why you have chosen our program in particular, what you hope to gain from your studies, and what you hope to contribute to the discipline or profession. We recommend that you refer to our website to familiarize yourself with our program and the areas of specialization we offer. Your statement should be no longer than two single-spaced pages.
Three letters of recommendation, preferably from professors from whom you have recently taken courses in your field or who have directed you in independent research or in your thesis. These letters should assess your abilities and achievements, and they should evaluate your potential for success in our program
minimum TOEFL score of 500/61 (paper/internet) or IELTS overall band test result of 6.00 is required.
