Oral traditions” and “folklore” vitally connect us with the imaginations and histories of “the folk”—often ordinary men and women who created and continue to create our world—and substantially form our sense of belonging or not to ethnic, national, gendered, professional and other groups. Oral narratives and folklore include cosmogonies, folktales and fairy tales, legends, epics, Hawaiian wahi pana, ghost stories, jokes, ballads, chants, proverbs or wise sayings, and mythologies. And yet, “oral traditions” and “folklore” are not coterminous. Oral traditions function socially as popular history and literature, depending on their specific cultural and socio-historical location. Folklore—a concept and term that was introduced into the English language in 1848—includes non-verbal traditions such as festivals, foodways, and ethnic dance, performance, and theater as well as verbal expressions of popular history and literature.
Disciplines such as folklore studies, literary studies, indigenous studies, gender studies, composition, history, and cultural history ask different questions of “oral narratives” and “folklore,” but consider them as forms of knowledge and forms of art. Whether the focus is on the cultural production of women, indigenous peoples, the state, young adults, or diasporic groups, the adaptation and translation of oral narratives and folklore across cultures and media—including film and the internet—is an increasingly popular focus for scholars in a range of disciplines.
Bringing a “cultural studies” perspective to the study of oral traditions and folklore historicizes questions of power and transmission and offers a located perspective that interrogates how oral traditions in Hawai‘i and Oceania have, for instance, been shaped by colonialism, as well as by electronic technologies, and how indigenous peoples are re-creating them today.

Entry requirements for 休士頓大學淨湖分校
Applicants to the Ph.D. program must hold or expect to hold prior to matriculation a Master’s degree in English or a closely related field.At minimum, the applicant needs to demonstrate above average academic performance (B average, usually a 3.0 on a 1.0-4.0 scale) for undergraduate course work and for any post-baccalaureate or graduate course work.
Transcripts from each postsecondary institution you have attended. Unofficial copies are acceptable for the admissions application, but admitted students must submit official transcripts in order to enroll at UHM.
Certain applicants may be required to submit the following items:
o Residency Declaration Form
o Proof of sufficient funding (international students only)
o Official TOEFL or IELTS exam scores (international students only)
GRE scores. Only the General Test (verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing sections) is required. For applicants who hold degrees in fields other than English, taking the Subject Test in Literature (in addition to the General Test) is
advisable. Upload your Test Taker’s Score Report to the Supplemental Documents Upload Website, we will use this to expedite our review process while we wait for ETS to report your official scores.
A Statement of Objectives. In evaluating applications, we place a great deal of weight on the statement, which is your chance to give the admissions committee a clear sense of why you want a doctoral degree in English, why you have chosen our program in particular, what you hope to gain from your studies, and what you hope to contribute to the discipline or profession. We recommend that you refer to our website to familiarize yourself with our program and the areas of specialization we offer. Your statement should be no longer than two single-spaced pages.
Three letters of recommendation, preferably from professors from whom you have recently taken courses in your field or who have directed you in independent research or in your thesis. These letters should assess your abilities and achievements, and they should evaluate your potential for success in our program
minimum TOEFL score of 500/61 (paper/internet) or IELTS overall band test result of 6.00 is required.
