Master of Social Work - Gerontology

The Specialization in Gerontology is available for students currently enrolled in the MSW program. The National Institute on Aging estimates the need for 70,000 social workers in older adult services by 2020. Given these statistics, social work professionals require current knowledge about a broad range of fundamental issues that encompass the older adult experience. The Specialization in Gerontology Program (SGP) in the LSU MSW Program, in cooperation with the LSU Life Course & Aging Center (LCAC), addresses the educational needs of full time and part time students who aspire to be engaged in planning, administration, and/or provision of services for older adults. Goals of the SGP are the following:
to prepare students to practice in the field of gerontological social work - to carry out professional roles and responsibilities consistent with the values and ethics of social work as they relate to practice with older adults,
to prepare students to understand the biopsychosocial, economic, administrative, service delivery, and social policy contexts of aging within the parameters of social work practice in a health care setting,
to provide students with an interdisciplinary, educational experience and raise awareness of perspective and skills from a health or human service discipline additional to social work, and
to provide students with a gerontological field experience that enhances understanding of social work practice relationships based on empowerment and respect for the values of human dignity and worth, cultural diversity, self-determination, and social justice.

Entry requirements for 路易斯安那州立大學
A grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.00 (A equals 4.0) on all undergraduate work (or in the final 64 credit hours) and any graduate work already completed.
Applicants should have at least a 3.00 GPA on all undergraduate and graduate course work already completed.
School of Social Work admission requirements for ALL programs are the same. The following requirements must be completed prior to admission to the Full time, Part time, Advanced Standing and MSW Online programs:
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
Demonstration of a liberal arts undergraduate preparation through completion of at least 12 credit hours in the social and behavioral sciences (psychology, sociology, anthropology, human geography, economics, political science, curriculum & instruction, etc.), and at least 9 hours in the humanities (literature, languages, history, women’s studies, art or music history, philosophy, cultural and comparative studies, communication studies, etc.)
“C” or better in an introductory statistics course in any undergraduate department, this course cannot be taken concurrently with MSW courses
A 3.0 cumulative grade point average on undergraduate or graduate course work for regular admission, Minimum of 2.55 cumulative or last 60 hours gpa for probationary admission in certain cases
Evidence that the applicant possesses the personal qualities and aptitudes essential for the social work profession
A genuine interest in people and emotional stability
Meeting minimum entrance requirements does not guarantee admission.
A total of three (3) recommendation forms are required for your admission file to be complete. A letter of support is optional.
Current resume or vita.
One official copy of all transcripts from all universities attended. Transcripts may be mailed in sealed envelopes to the LSU School of Social Work
TOEFL minimum score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), 79 (internet-based), IELTS minimum score of 6.5.
English language requirements
