Research in Drug Discovery at the University of Wisconsin focuses on areas related to medicinal chemistry, such as small molecule development, natural products isolation and characterization, organic synthesis, and rational drug design. The School of Pharmacy?s Analytical Instrumentation Center offers state of the art instrumentation to expedite the isolation and full structural elucidation of the many diverse small molecules generated via the Discovery Core. In collaboration with the Pharmaceutical Sciences Drug Action and Drug Delivery Cores, these chemical entities can be subsequently evaluated via high throughput screening toward lead generation or specifically utilized to probe novel biological phenomenon toward in-depth mechanistic study. Thus, the UW Pharmaceutical Sciences Drug Discovery Core presents the student with intensive training in modern organic chemistry coupled with a distinctive exposure to the modern applications of small molecules within biology and medicine.

GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) Required, 3 Letters of Recommendation Required . Accepted students commonly have strong scientific backgrounds, a passion for research, and significant laboratory experience. Students with undergraduate degrees in the physical or biological sciences, engineering, pharmacy, and related fields are encouraged to apply. Students who have earned masters degrees are also welcomed to apply, but a masters degree is not a requirement. One may apply directly to the Pharmaceutical Sciences Ph.D. program with a bachelor's degree background (as long as a bachelor's degree would be completed by the time one would begin graduate studies). Statement of Purpose for Graduate Study , Please upload unofficial transcripts as pdfs for each university or college attended. (Institutions attended as part of a study abroad program do not need to be included if the coursework is reflected on your current institution’s transcripts). The minimum undergraduate grade point average required for admission is 3.00 using a 4.00 scale. A minimum undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00 on the equivalent of the last 60 semester hours (approximately two years of work) or a master’s degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 is required. Applicants from an international institution must demonstrate strong academic achievement comparable to a 3.00 for an undergraduate or master’s degree.
The required proficiency scores are: Minimum TOEFL requirement: 92 internet (iBT), 580 paper-based test (PBT), Minimum IELTS requirement: 7.0
