Plastic chomping company takes out top sustainability award

An ANU-backed start up that is turning the tide on the wave of plastic pollution flooding our planet has taken out a top prize in one of Australia's major sustainability awards.

Samsara, launched last year with backing from ANU, Woolworths and venture fund Main Sequence, uses enzymes to break down plastics to their core elements. These ''building blocks'' are the used to create new plastics.

The enviro-tech start up won the Ignite category in the Banksia National Sustainability Awards for its ''revolutionary'' process of ''infinite recycling''.

E-cigarettes are harmful and addicting youth: Report

E-cigarettes, or vapes, are causing harm and risk introducing a new generation to smoking, warn experts from The Australian National University (ANU) following a government report into vaping.

The major review found use of nicotine e-cigarettes increases the risk of a range of adverse health outcomes, particularly in youth, including taking up smoking, addiction, poisoning, seizures, trauma and burns and lung injury.

"We reviewed the global evidence in order to support informed choices on vaping for Australia," lead author Professor Emily Banks from the ANU National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health said. "The evidence shows e-cigarettes carry significant harms.''

Culture grows social cohesion beyond economic incentives

Social enterprises looking to build social cohesion in communities may find economic logic a useful starting point in program design, but for long-term gains, they should embed programs in a cultural context, Australian National University (ANU) research has found.

College of Business and Economics researcher Dr Babita Bhatt and her team worked with 20 social enterprises that focus on community projects across Australia to examine the mechanisms each was using to foster social cohesion in their jurisdictions.

One of the most successful mechanisms researchers discovered was where social enterprises had created a community enterprise or community asset that is owned and operated not by individuals, but by the community as a collective.

Work integrated learning

Work-integrated learning courses give ANU students opportunities to apply what they have learned during their studies in real-world settings while earning credit towards their degree. ANU offers these and other skills development programs through its colleges and international partnerships.

Research and academic profile: Dr Brad Tucker

Dr Tucker is an astrophysicist and cosmologist at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics and the National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science at The Australian National University.

He earned his bachelor degrees in physics, philosophy, and theology from the University of Notre Dame and a PhD in Astrophysics and Cosmology from ANU. Today, he's leading programs using the NASA's Kepler Space Telescope and TESS to understand why and how stars blow up.

He's also building a network of ultraviolet telescopes in the upper atmosphere, a search to find Planet 9, as well as issues surrounding the mining of asteroids – and regularly talks to schools and radio stations. As well as publishing many research papers, Dr Tucker also helped the Royal Australian Mint develop a series of astronomy themed coins and is writing a book.

ANU offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in:

ANU has monthly offer rounds. International students can apply for a single program only. They can choose the one that is best for them from the programs and courses catalogue.

To be considered for an offer, both undergraduate and postgraduate applicants must meet the prerequisite and cognate requirements for their preferred program, as well as the ANU English language requirements.

Undergraduate study

Undergraduate applicants must meet the University's minimum academic requirements for their senior secondary studies or for post-secondary studies, including vocational education and training, associate diplomas or degrees or an approved tertiary preparation course. ANU also recognises one standard full-time year of study in a degree program at another Australian higher education institution or the international equivalents.

Postgraduate study

Applicants for postgraduate degrees need to have completed an ANU-approved bachelor degree or equivalent qualifications, in accordance with the Australian Qualifications Framework.

English language requirements

In their application, students will need provide evidence that demonstrates they meet the English language requirements. ANU accepts a number of tests, including IELTS, TOEFL and Duolingo.

Application assessment process

ANU assesses applications from international students in three steps: eligibility check, rankings and outcomes and offers. The university regularly updates students about their application status and the steps they will need to take next.

At the outcomes and offers stage, ANU will inform students of the result of their application, how to accept an offer or how to re-apply for a future study intake.

ANU offers talented and academically outstanding students a range of internal and external scholarships that can help support and encourage them during their studies. These generally recognise academic achievement and unique challenges and can help cover tuition and living expenses.

This scholarship provides academically outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate students with a 25 or 50 per cent reduction in tuition fees, depending on their region, over the term of their degree program.

ANU guarantees first year international students an offer of accommodation. They can indicate a preference for self-catered or catered accommodation in their application and have numerous accommodation options to choose from, each with a diverse residential community.

All of the residences have 24-hour security, outdoor spaces, study rooms, common rooms and facilities, such as laundries, kitchens and bathrooms and living areas. They are a short walk or bike ride from shops, restaurants, public transport and other amenities.
