Overview

Auckland University of Technology (AUT) has a mission to create great graduates. The university offers exceptional learning experiences that prepare students to be successful wherever in the world their career may take them. Innovation and entrepreneurship are encouraged, along with the ability to explore new technologies, challenge routine thinking, and solve problems in new ways. AUT graduates are highly sought after by employers, with 95 per cent of available graduates in paid employment within nine months of graduation.

AUT's three modern campuses have several award-winning buildings created using sustainable principles and with inviting, collaborative and functional learning areas, auditoriums and research spaces. This includes the state-of-the-art Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences building, with unique design features making it a teaching tool and ‘living lab' where students can get hands-on experience.

AUT's success in creating transformational educational spaces has been recognised with a five-star ranking for teaching and facilities, awarded by the university rankings organisation QS. AUT offers more than 250 courses in subjects ranging from engineering and health sciences to art and design and business. AUT is proud to be one of the world's best modern universities, ranked as the top millennial university in Australasia and in the top 40 universities under 50 years old worldwide by Times Higher Education.

AUT has been a university since the year 2000, and is now the second largest in the country and ranked among the top one per cent and top 300 (251-300) of universities in the world. AUT has more than 60 research centres and institutes delivering leading research, from space research to artificial intelligence and robotics, and ecology to physical activity and nutrition. AUT's research feeds back into the classroom, and students can contribute to and learn from these research discoveries.

Study experience

Study experience

Auckland University of Technology offers exceptional learning experiences to its students. As a university of technology in New Zealand, it encourages innovation and entrepreneurship.

The teaching at AUT is creative, interactive as well as responsive, and is characterised by contemporary approaches, resources and technologies. AUT's students become agile thinkers and they communicate with a larger understanding of the world.

The university's academic staff are active in their pursuit of research and are also at the forefront in their disciplines.

Apart from being ranked among the top one per cent of the world's universities, AUT is also ranked as one of the best in the world for several subjects, including being among the world's top 35 for sports, top 34 for hospitality and tourism, top 125 for clinical, pre-clinical and health subjects and top 150 in art and design.

Here's what a student had to say about his AUT experience:

Kaisar Nurkhal RF Hardware Developer, Navico Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering

''I chose to study at AUT because it's considered to have a more practical approach to study, and for engineering that made the most sense. My project partner and I worked on an incredible final-year project with the goal to design, build and programme a robot with artificial intelligence and computer vision, and get it to perform complex tasks like sorting different objects. The task was huge and daunting at the beginning, but we succeeded. For me, the final year of the engineering degree was the ultimate learning experience as it's as close as you can get to real-life industry experience.''

Exchange & study abroad

Exchange & study abroad

International exchange program

All AUT international students who are interested in travelling while they complete their AUT degree, can complete one or two semesters at one of its partner universities on an international exchange.

Studying overseas can change students' lives and they will have the opportunity to meet new people, immerse themselves in another culture, and gain international experience. They can also cross-credit the points they receive back to their degree at AUT as well as continue their studies when they return to New Zealand.

Some reasons why students do an international exchange are:

  • They learn a lot, both personally and academically.
  • They return to AUT with more self-confidence as well as maturity.
  • They add value to their degrees by experiencing various teaching styles as well as taking different courses.

Study abroad programme

International students who are studying their main degree at their home university/country, can choose to come to New Zealand to study abroad at AUT for a semester or a year in their chosen major, or a different discipline. Students can cross-credit points they earn at AUT towards their home degree and gain international experience during study.

Students can choose to:

  • Take up to four courses in a semester.
  • Take the study-internship option (which is two courses and a supervised internship course).

AUT will provide students a unique Kiwi welcome to the university and to New Zealand, and will offer support with settling into study and life there. Students can expect to make many friends, learn more about New Zealand's unique culture and enjoy wonderful scenery. The programme provides an ideal way to gain relevant experience and enhance their academic study.
