Located in the cultural capital city of Wales, Cardiff Metropolitan University offers a range of courses which focus on practical and professional learning.

Recently awarded Welsh university of the year (Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021), its two campuses are home to over 11,000 students from 143 countries.

Established in 1865, students at Cardiff Met can expect teaching excellence and plenty of support.

Its five academic schools present courses which have been designed alongside business and industry professionals. This ensures student's education is career-focused and relevant for industry demands. A collaborative institution, Cardiff Met also has dedicated global academies which pull together research, innovation, and teaching to help solve global issues.

What's new

Rankings and recognition

Cardiff Metropolitan University was recently awarded the prestigious title of Welsh university of the year by the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021.

The Quality Enhancement Review also recently commended Cardiff Met for several initiatives launched over the pandemic. This includes its proactive approach to student support, transnational partnerships, and how Cardiff Met enhanced the student learning experience.

New course

The university has launched a new BA (Hons) in applied entrepreneurship and innovation management. Aimed at undergraduates who want to run their own business, Cardiff Met is the only UK institution offering this kind of degree. A three-year course, students will develop their business at the Cardiff School of Management, before launching it officially in the final year of study.

Research centre

Cardiff Met has opened a new research centre which will focus on addressing societal challenges. The new Centre for Health, Activity and Wellbeing Research (CAWR) will work alongside communities both in the UK and across the world.

Aiming to become the Welsh hub for the development of health, activity, and wellbeing, CAWR will have four areas of expertise:

  • Cardiovascular physiology
  • Physical health education for lifelong learning
  • Public health and wellbeing
  • Wellbeing in demanding environments

Funding

The university has provided additional funding to its students' union. Its GBP 30,000 investment will support sports clubs and societies that faced financial difficulties because of COVID-19.

Global academies

Cardiff Met has launched global academies, which will solve societal issues through research, innovation, and collaboration with postgraduate students. The academies will also offer a range of postgraduate learning and research opportunities. Made up of four departments, the academies are split into the following areas: food science, safety, and security, health and human performance as well as human centred design.

Teaching quality

Teaching quality

The university was recognised by the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021, which awarded Cardiff Met with the impressive title of Welsh university of the year.

The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) has verified that the university meets UK expectations of academic standards and teaching quality. QAA highlighted good practices within the university's Learning and Teaching Development Unit, the students' union and the Your Career online platform.

The university has also been commended by the Quality Enhancement Review. The review praised the institution for its work over the pandemic, including student support initiatives, transnational partnerships, and the overall learning experience.

Cardiff Met has recently launched several global academies. The academies will provide postgraduate students with opportunities to collaborate and research with industry experts from around the world.

Department structure

Department structure

Cardiff Met has five academic schools spread over three campuses. Offering a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, the university has worked collaboratively with business and industry experts to create career-focused programs.

Its academic schools are:

School of Art and Design

Home to creative degree courses, the school teaches a variety of disciplines and a flexible way of learning, so students can choose several elements of their studies. Course options include architecture, fine art, interior design, and photography.

School of Education and Social Policy

Educating students for over 60 years, the school is split into three departments: humanities, professional development, and initial teacher education.

It is amongst the largest teacher education and training centres in the UK and has an international reputation for teaching excellence. Its full-time teaching staff and visiting lecturers are experts in their discipline.

School of Management

The school of management's courses have been specifically designed to meet employer expectations. Areas taught within the school include modern languages, finance, tourism, business information technology and computing.

The school is a professional member of CABS and EFMD, and offers several study pathways including full-time, part-time, undergraduate, postgraduate, as well as on-campus and online.

School of Sport & Health Sciences

This school is internationally recognised for the quality of its research and academic work. Providing an education which focuses on employability and impactful research, students work collaboratively with their peers, industry partners, health boards and national governing bodies.

School of Technologies

Recently opened in 2018, the school offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, as well as research opportunities. Courses have been designed by tech experts and employers, to ensure they are industry relevant.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Entry requirements at Cardiff Met are dependent on the course applied for, and the home country of the applicant. Country-specific guidelines and requirements can be found on the university's website.

To be considered for their chosen course, international applicants need to submit the following:

  • Educational reference
  • English language certificate
  • Evidence of sponsorship (if required)
  • Personal statement
  • Photocopies of exam certificates and transcripts

Some courses will also require portfolios of work and evidence of academic achievements.

Applicants who do not have English as a first language will also need to meet Cardiff Met's English language proficiency requirements. The institution accepts a range of English language tests, including:

  • Cambridge English Advanced
  • Cambridge ESOL
  • IELTS
  • Pearsons
  • Trinity College London
  • TOEFL IBT

Applicants can seek exemption from English language tests if they have previously completed an academic qualification equivalent to a UK degree, which was taught in English.

Students who don't meet the English requirements or want to improve their language skills can attend pre-sessional or foundation courses through Cardiff Met's English Language Training Centre. The centre has been nominated for several awards and is led by experienced staff who understand the challenges of learning a new language abroad.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

Cardiff Met offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships for international students.

International students are automatically assessed for scholarship awards, so they won't need to submit a separate application. Scholarship awards will be mentioned in student's offer letters from the university.

Scholarship options include:

  • Alumni scholarship: 25 per cent discount on course fees given to postgraduate students who have studied an undergraduate course at Cardiff Met.
  • Cardiff Met Sanctuary award: Scholarship for postgraduate students seeking UK sanctuary.
  • Global Wales postgraduate scholarship: GBP 10,000 for eligible masters' students from India, Vietnam, USA and the EU.
  • MBA scholarship – GBP 1,000 to MBA students based on academic and/or professional achievements.
  • South East Asia scholarship – 50 per cent off tuition fees for students from South East Asia.
  • Undergraduate scholarship – awards GBP 1,000 to eligible students.
  • Vice chancellor scholarship – GBP 1,500 to eligible MA and MSc students.

Graduate outcomes

Cardiff Met has an impressive employment rate, with 95 per cent of students in full-time employment or further study within six months of graduating.

The university's practical and professionally focused courses prepare students for real work environments. It provides extensive opportunities for personal and career development, including collaborations with industry experts, as well as work experience and industry placements.

Working in partnership with students to develop their employability, the university's careers service, provide individual consultations. Its expert team also create and develop career plans, find work placements, and run networking events including careers fairs and workshops.
