Overview

Claremont Graduate University (CGU) is a research university located in Claremont, California, and is the oldest graduate-only higher education institution in the United States. The university is a member of The Claremont Colleges, a group of seven world-class institutions modeled after Oxford and Cambridge, and is spread across a 19-acre campus, within walking distance to the popular Claremont Village and just 35 miles from downtown Los Angeles. CGU embraces all nationalities and welcomes students from over 50 different countries around the world.

Students have the option of studying a wide range of postgraduate programs, including master's degrees, doctoral degrees, and certificates. All programs are practice-based and tailored to students' specific career needs and goals, thus helping to ensure that they will meet their career aspirations following graduation. Students also have the chance to gain industry experience through a variety of internship options.

There is a dedicated Career Development Office at CGU which offers a wide range of services, including helping students to launch or advance their career, develop a stand-out CV and cover letter, and help them with finding internship opportunities and relevant career workshops, among other services.

A wide range of clubs and societies are available for students to get involved with during their graduate careers, and many of these groups also provide students with ideal networking opportunities as well as skills to boost their CVs.

Other student support services are available at the university, including confidential counselling with a trained team of professionals, access to an on-site medical team, and a dedicated Student Disability Resource Centre for those with a disability or special needs.

Faculty & research

CGU faculty are widely recognized as leaders in their fields who bring the latest expertise into the classroom and conduct applied research that improves the world. They also work to nurture the next generation of leaders, building close, collaborative working relationships with students to help them develop their own professional reputation while still students. Faculty teach and conduct research across disciplines to look at problems in new ways.

Being part of the highly reputable Claremont Colleges provides CGU students with access to superior resources and services. As a CGU student, one can take classes with many of the 550 faculty members from the colleges, make use of four libraries with more than two million volumes, and get involved in a host of affiliated organizations, programs, and institutes.

CGU is intentionally small. With a median class size of 8, professors are highly accessible. Because of its moderate size, CGU can collaborate, innovate, and stay current. Its commitment to cultural and intellectual diversity fosters interaction that leads to novel and creative approaches to issues facing our world.

CGU's seven schools - each with a unique vision and mission - embrace a transdisciplinary approach to teaching that focuses on applied learning and research.

The Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management (Drucker)

Prepares leaders with powerful, ethical, and universal management skills, with a focus on being globally minded and socially conscious. The Drucker School is affiliated with Southwestern Law School and Art Center College of Design.

The School of Social Science, Policy & Evaluation (SSSPE)

Engages students in holistic, interdisciplinary scholarship to solve real-world problems and enhance society. SSSPE houses two scholastic divisions devoted to this mission: The Division of Behavioral & Organizational Sciences and the Division of Politics & Economics.

The School of Arts & Humanities (SAH)

Teaches the disciplines of art, music, applied women's studies, cultural studies, English, history, and religion, creating a unique educational environment designed to promote disciplinary depth and flexibility.

The School of Community & Global Health (SCGH)

Is catalyzing a new vision of how humankind conceptualizes and promotes health to improve the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities.

The School of Educational Studies (SES)

Offers programs in Education and Teacher Education and prepares future educators for the unprecedented challenges facing today's K–12 and higher education climates.

The Center for Information Systems & Technology (CISAT)

Provides research-infused instruction that prepares professionals and educators to assume leadership positions in the field of Information Systems & Technology.

The Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMS)

Trains mathematical scientists for positions in education, industry, and government laboratories, and is part of the Claremont Center for the Mathematical Sciences, with more than 60 faculty members spanning all areas of pure and applied mathematics.

English Entrance Requirements

  • Direct Entry: TOEFL iBT 95+ / IELTS 7.0/PearsonPTE 66+
    • IELTS scores of 7.0 with no sub-section lower than 6.5 are eligible for direct entry
  • Module 1: TOEFL iBT 75-84 / IELTS 6.0/ PearsonPTE 50-57
  • Module 2: TOEFL iBT 85-94 / IELTS 6.5-7.0/ Pearson PTE 58-65

The International Scholars Program (ISP) is specially designed for non-native English-speaking international students who are ready for graduate study. It will prepare students for the rigors of graduate study through an integrated cluster of classes that will refine their language, research, and participation skills. ISP is not a typical ''language program'' it is designed to help students succeed in graduate-level courses by teaching them about the practices and expectations of American academic and business culture.

Depending upon their level of English proficiency, students will enter at either module 1 or module 2. When they achieve a grade of B or better in all the courses in their module, students will proceed to the next module. Upon successful completion of the International Scholars Program, students will proceed to their graduate program of study and receive a certificate.

Academic Entrance Requirements

Students must first be admitted to a CGU academic program to be eligible for the International Scholars Program.

Housing

As a CGU student, one will discover countless benefits to living in student housing. Classes, a quiet place to study, and the library are all within walking distance in the small city of Claremont.

There are two options that are a short walk from the CGU campus. Claremont Collegiate Apartments offer one-bedroom and studio apartment options for CGU students and undergraduates from nearby colleges. The Oasis Residential Commons houses graduate students only and includes classroom and group meeting spaces, a gym, swimming pool, study rooms, and lounges.

Dining

On campus, Hagelbarger's Cafe serves delicious food made from scratch daily, including soups, salads, pasta, sandwiches, and more-with vegetarian options. Students can also buy assorted snacks, beverages, and Starbucks coffee.

Students may dine at any of the Claremont Colleges dining halls, which offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner options for those with or without dietary restrictions.

The nearby Claremont Village lets students choose from more than 50 additional restaurants, cafes, pubs, and more.

The Claremont Colleges Libraries

The Claremont Colleges Library houses collections in the arts, humanities, sciences, social sciences, and includes nearly 2 million volumes. The library has extensive holdings of journals, magazines, and newspapers, providing access to articles in over 70,000 periodicals.

The library regularly conducts research workshops and provides reservable, graduate-only study spaces and lockers to store study materials. The library also provides access to course readings for all programs across the colleges.

Students also have access to several nearby affiliated libraries: Denison Library, located on the Scripps College campus and the botanical and horticultural library of the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden.

Scholarships & funding

Claremont Graduate University's seasoned staff can help students navigate the financial aid process. The staff make every effort to provide accurate, efficient, and timely assistance with financial aid.

  • All international students are considered for merit-based fellowships upon being admitted to one of CGU's graduate programs.
  • Over USD 12 million dollars in fellowship aid is awarded to CGU students annually.
  • Merit-based fellowships are awarded to students based on the recommendation of each academic department.
  • Fellowships are offered based on enrollment in 12-16 units each semester. If enrollment changes, fellowships are adjusted.
  • CGU is committed to honoring the awarded level of fellowship support throughout a student's time in required coursework if satisfactory academic progress is maintained.
  • 85 percent of our students receive fellowships. The average annual fellowship is USD 15,000.
