Being a direct pathway to Deakin University, Deakin College provides students with the skills, knowledge and experience that is required to transition successfully to Deakin University. Apart from being the university's preferred pathway provider, Deakin College also offers the following advantages that make it an attractive choice.

Flexible start dates

Deakin College allows three intakes per year, which means students can choose to enter a course when it is convenient for them, allowing for flexibility in their plans and schedules.

Location

With all of Deakin College's Australian campuses being located within Deakin University campuses, students have full access to services and facilities of the university. These campuses are conveniently located and easily accessible by public transport.

At Deakin College itself, there are a wide range of support services that students can avail to ensure a smooth transition to Deakin University.

Fast-track options

Deakin College allows students to complete a diploma course in just eight months, thus making it possible to enter university much earlier than those opting for a conventional pathway program.

Small class

Deakin College ensures that students receive intensive, personalised academic contact and support, with a maximum of 30 students per class, complemented by small group tutorials and workshops.

Deakin College's three Australian campuses are all located within the Deakin University campuses in the State of Victoria. The three locations are:

Melbourne Burwood

This continually evolving site is Deakin College's largest campus, with around 26,000 students and 1,500 staff, and more than matches students' needs both in and outside of the classroom. The campus is about 16 kilometres from the city centre and is home to architecturally designed buildings and state-of-the-art teaching facilities. Students at the Burwood campus learn in a relaxed atmosphere, savouring the delights of studying amongst leafy green parklands, while being close to all the wonderful benefits of a thriving metropolis.

Waterfront

This modern campus is based in the centre of downtown Geelong, in a uniquely beautiful location. The stunning views on offer at Corio Bay, and the proximity to the Geelong CBD as well as the world-famous Victorian Surf Coast, are only some of the delights of this campus. Apart from spectacular shore views, the campus offers purpose-built classrooms, a state-of-the-art library, computer labs, shared learning and study spaces, and creative areas to meet, with heritage architecture all around.

Waurn Ponds

The Deakin Waurn Ponds campus is located on the western edge of Geelong and offers students the best of both worlds, a stunning modern campus set in expansive grounds, and proximity to some of Australia's most beautiful beaches and of course, the world-famous Great Ocean Road. The campus contains the Geelong Technology Precinct which facilitates research and development for both university industry partnerships and new enterprises in the region. The campus also has the engineering training centre and Deakin Medical School.

Deakin College also has a campus in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The following are the categories of courses on offer at Deakin College:

Foundation program

This is equivalent to upper secondary school (Year 12) and university foundation programs. It strives to prepare students for further study through a Deakin College diploma, or alternatively, for entry into the first year of an appropriate Deakin University bachelor's degree. The program is aimed at those who have completed the equivalent of Australian high school Year 11.

The course comprises a standard or extended track program. The standard track program consists of eight academic units: four core units and four elective units. The extended track program has an additional four core units, one of which is chosen from two alternative core units.

Diploma

Diploma courses, accredited by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA), are designed for students who have completed high school Year 12 or a selected post-secondary certificate or diploma. Diploma courses are offered in the areas of business commerce communication construction management design engineering film, television, and animation health sciences information technology science. All diploma courses serve as pathways to a wide range of majors and more specialised degrees at Deakin University.

Masters qualifying program

The Master's degree qualifying program (Business and Law) offers a pathway to select Deakin University postgraduate programs offered in business and law. The emphasis is on building the skills necessary to succeed at postgraduate level. The program is taught jointly by Deakin College and Deakin University's English Language Institute (DUELI).

This is a non-award program aimed at international students whose academic qualifications or English proficiency levels do not match the entry requirements for coursework masters programs at Deakin University.

Students applying for a place to study at Deakin College must meet the required academic and English language entry requirements.

Foundation program

Entry to the foundation program at Deakin College requires the successful completion of the equivalent of Australian Year 11. To find out more about specific academic entry requirements or for clarification on qualifications that are not listed, students can forward their application and academic results to Deakin College for assessment.

Diploma

Entry to diploma courses requires the successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent. The Diploma of Engineering program requires students to have completed a pre-requisite subject of mathematics at an equivalent of an Australian Year 12.

Masters Qualifying Program

To be considered for application to the master's degree qualifying program, students need to have completed at least three years of post-secondary study, equivalent to post-year 12.

English language entry requirements

As the language of instruction at Deakin College is English, international students are required to demonstrate English language proficiency before being admitted to a course. Entry requires an IELTS score, which varies depending on the course. There are also other tests scores which are considered as valid for admission and students are encouraged to contact the college for more information.

Academic support

At Deakin, student learning advisors and student mentors are on hand to provide academic support to improve the study skills of students and help them achieve success in their chosen courses. Each course also has an academic coordinator, to help with course related advice.

Counselling

Deakin College is committed to providing support and advice to help students reach their full potential. Apart from accessing the general student welfare support offered at the campuses in Burwood and Geelong, students can also make appointments to discuss study or personal difficulties, accommodation problems, family matters, homesickness, and anything else that is an issue.

Disability support

The Disability Resource Centre (DRC) on campus promotes inclusion and access and provides assistance for those impacted by disability or mental health condition with regard to their study and participation in university life. DRC staff are available to work with students to identify any services and recommendations that will help them in meeting their study needs.

Medical support

Deakin College students have access to the medical centres on all three campuses, all of which provide private and confidential medical services and are staffed by highly trained and experienced doctors and nurses.

Students at Deakin College have a range of accommodation options open to them, both within and outside the campus. The college recommends that students arrange their accommodation as soon as they know the campus they will be studying in. Options will depend on campus location, budget and the student's preferred type of accommodation.

On-campus Accommodation

Students who choose to make Deakin their home can look forward to enjoying open and inviting spaces for socialising and studying, spacious new buildings and full Wi-Fi coverage. Living on campus allows students to immerse themselves in the Deakin experience, meet other students, and easily adjust to life at university. Each Deakin residence, on each of the three campuses - Melbourne Burwood, Geelong Waterfront and Geelong Waurn Ponds - is comfortable, secure, and welcoming. Students will have access to modern facilities and a 24/7 reception.

Off-campus accommodation

International House - Melbourne Burwood campus only

International House is located a short five minute walk from the Melbourne Burwood Campus of Deakin College. International House is ideal for those Deakin College students who prefer a secure townhouse and apartment style living. Demand for this type of accommodation tends to be quite high.

Homestay

Homestay provides students with the opportunity to live with a local family, couple or single people. This option is found to be popular with students arriving in Melbourne for the first time. It is also a great way for students to improve their English and experience Australian life and culture first-hand.
