Overview

DePaul University is a private university in Chicago, Illinois in the United States. It has been ranked as one of the Best National Universities by U.S News & World Report, as well as one of the nation's Best Value Colleges by a report in Forbes in 2017. The University is split across two campuses in the centre of the city - Lincoln Park Campus, close to Lake Michigan, and Loop Campus in Chicago's largest business district.

DePaul offers over 300 undergraduate and postgraduate programs, and boasts small classrooms – with an average student to faculty ratio of 15:1 to ensure that everyone receives the attention they deserve.

In their spare time, students can get involved with over 350 student organisations, ranging from sports clubs to specialist interest groups, as well as community service initiatives and professional development.

Students come from all over the world to study at DePaul University, which is very proud of its international population.

After graduation, 92% of students go on to find employment or further education within six months of leaving DePaul. There is also a Careers Centre, with career counsellors available to chat to, each specialising in a different subject area. Students can also get help online, with everything from CV writing tips to interview skills.

DePaul University is a private university dedicated to academic excellence. Based in Chicago in the United States, it has been named as one of the Best National Universities (U.S. News & World Report 2018) and one of the nation's Best Value Colleges (Forbes 2017).

There are more than 300 undergraduate and graduate programs to choose from, led by passionate and experienced teaching staff across ten colleges and schools. The university boasts small class sizes, where there is an average student-to-faculty ratio of 15:1. This means that all students receive the dedicated attention they need.

Students come from 114 countries to study at DePaul. The university is spread over two city-center campuses – Loop Campus in the business district, and Lincoln Park Campus, which is near to Lake Michigan.

University premises have everything that students need in life – basic amenities, comfortable housing, recreation facilities, athletics, and much more. During their free time, international students can enjoy some of the 350+ student-led organizations. These include sports clubs, special interest groups, community service initiatives, and professional development.

All 92 percent of DePaul undergraduate students enter into professional employment or continue their studies within six months of graduating. The dedicated Careers Center is on-hand to provide support with all areas related to careers, such as CV writing and interview skills, from friendly career counselors or online help services.

Chicago is an excellent location for any student. It's full of cultural experiences including performance theatres, museums, and music festivals, has 26 miles of lakefront, and is home to over 30 Fortune 500 Companies, making it an ideal place to settle as a professional.

What's new

The Second City and DePaul University have announced a collaboration designed to expand comedy education. Starting in the upcoming fall semester, DePaul’s School of Cinematic Arts will offer comprehensive new undergraduate and graduate degrees in comedy filmmaking:

  • Master of Fine Arts in screenwriting with a concentration in comedy
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in film and television with a concentration in comedy filmmaking
  • Minor in comedy filmmaking

Students will attend classes at The Second City, as well as within DePaul’s expansive studio and classroom facilities at Cinespace Chicago Film Studios, where network dramas “Empire,” “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago P.D.” and “Chicago Med” regularly shoot. Classes offered to DePaul students will include:

  • DNA of The Second City
  • Evolution of Comedy
  • Comedy Improvisation for Filmmakers
  • The Comedy Director at Work
  • Second City

"Second City has been nurturing comedic talent in Chicago for nearly 60 years. Two years ago, in starting the Harold Ramis Film School, we successfully expanded our approach to attracting and developing nascent screenwriters and directors. By partnering with DePaul, we will now have the opportunity to teach an even broader range of student’s comedy in an accredited environment," said Second City CEO Andrew Alexander.

“Together, DePaul and Second City will merge the crafts of comedy storytelling and filmmaking into the most comprehensive program of its kind. The curriculum will give students the opportunity to create, develop and showcase their comedic writing and directing from the script to the screen,” said Gary Novak, director of DePaul’s School of Cinematic Arts.

New and innovative Grace School of Applied Diplomacy

DePaul University recently received an incredible gift of USD 20 million to establish the Grace School of Applied Diplomacy.

Based within the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the multidisciplinary Grace School prepares students for diplomacy careers in a wide variety of areas. It offers exciting undergraduate and graduate programs in Applied Diplomacy, where students develop professional skills in conflict resolution, mediation, and bridge-building.

The Grace School transcends a traditional educational approach and aims to prepare the next generation of pioneering leaders. It's designed to empower individuals to pursue sustainable social justice at home and overseas, where they are equipped with the tools to face some of the world's most vexing challenges.

Undergraduate admissions

Students educated outside the U.S. for secondary school (high school) are required to submit an exam score that meets our English proficiency requirement.

If the English proficiency scores are below the minimum requirement, students might be considered for Conditional Admission.

Students can demonstrate proof of English proficiency by ​one of the following:

  • TOEFL - 80 on the IBT TOEFL with no subsection lower than 17
  • IELTS Academic​ - 6.5
  • SAT - minimum evidence based reading and writing score of 540
  • ACT - minimum reading score of 18 and English score of 20
  • PTE Academic- minimum English academic score of 53

Conditional Admission English Language Requirement

  • TOEFL - 60 - 79 on the IBT TOEFL
  • IELTS Academic - 6.0
  • PTE Academic - 42 on the English academic score

Postgraduate admissions

Graduate applicants are those who have completed or are in the process of completing the equivalent to a United States bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution, either in the United States or abroad, and are welcome to apply to a graduate or professional program of study. The programs offered by DePaul University includes MA, MS, MFA, PhD, LLM and JD.

Each graduate program establishes its own application and admission standards. The deadlines may differ from program to program even within the same department.

DePaul University Library

The DePaul University Library is a partner in a number of campus programs, including the first-year experience (Chicago Quarter), the Teaching Commons, and the Graduate Certificate in the Digital Humanities. In 2013, a major renovation of the Richardson Library facilitated the launch of the Richardson Library Information Commons, a technology-enhanced space including individual, group, and collaborative work spaces, Learning Commons and Scholar’s Lab.

    If students are looking for a traditional college setting, they can choose the Lincoln Park Campus. Located just a mile from Lake Michigan, this 30-acre campus boasts traditional residence halls as well as apartments. Lincoln Park buildings are fully furnished and provide residence through Lincoln Park Residence Halls and Lincoln Park Apartments​.
  • Loop Housing Options
    For those students who prefer high-rise living and convenience to DePaul's Loop Campus, the University Center provides accommodation options suitable for them. The DePaul University Library is home to an extensive collection of learning resources including over one million physical and digital books. It also offers many support services to aid student learning.

DePaul Art Museum

Students can enjoy the university's own art museum, which has 4–6 rotating exhibitions each year. It houses some of the world's most amazing works, including work by Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol.

Accommodation options

Lincoln Park – Students can enjoy a traditional college experience by living on the Lincoln Park Campus. Spread over 30-acres, the campus is just one mile from Lake Michigan and is home to traditional halls of residence and apartments. Rooms are fully furnished.

Loop Housing – Shared with other local universities, students can live close to the Loop Campus where they can choose from high-rise suites and apartments.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

DePaul awards more than USD 28 million in scholarships to incoming freshman students each year, and more than USD 11 million in need-based gift aid on an annual basis.

If students are applying to enroll in the Fall Quarter, they will automatically be considered for freshman academic scholarships of up to USD 23,000 annually when they complete their application.

DePaul Freshman Scholarships

Students are automatically considered for one of the University’s four academic scholarships - Presidential Scholarship, Deans’ Scholarship, DePaul Scholars’ Award, and St. Vincent DePaul Scholarship when they apply to DePaul. The scholarships consist of an award amount of USD 13,000 to USD 23,000.

DePaul University ensures that campus safety is a top priority in a variety of different ways, including:

Call boxes and house phones

A number of well-marked exterior call boxes are located throughout the Lincoln Park campus. These emergency call boxes can be used to report any type of emergency.

DPU Alert

DPU Alert is DePaul University's emergency notification system, where all students, faculty, staff, and visitors can immediately be notified of any distressing situations. This is done through telephone, text or email, where the university sends messages about incidents and instructions of what to do to be safe.

Safety escort service

DePaul University has its own Public Safety Department, where an escort service is available. This provides students who feel uncomfortable traveling about campus alone with a friendly officer who will accompany them to where they need to go.
