Overview

Established in 1991, Edith Cowan University (ECU) is a modern Australian institution with a reputation for delivering a progressive and forward-thinking curriculum, ensuring its students are well-placed to meet the future needs of society. The university has been awarded a five-star rating for teaching quality in the 2024 Good Universities Guide and has maintained this record for 17 consecutive years.

ECU is situated in Perth, the state capital of Western Australia, known for its sweeping landscapes of ancient rock formations, world-class wineries, and thousands of miles of sandy beaches with warm, clear waters. It is a dynamic city with a rapidly growing economy and plenty of attractions and activities for students to discover.

There are over 250 courses available at ECU, developed in collaboration with professional partners, ensuring content is continually relevant to industry needs. Many programmes are designed to include vocational modules, work experience and group-based project work, which cultivates strong critical thinking skills and makes ECU graduates highly desirable to future employers.

ECU is also known for providing the support services necessary to ensure the academic and personal development of its population of 30,000 students. There are scholarships and bursaries available along with a lively and active Student Guild, which runs an exciting calendar of social events and organises the many clubs and societies in which students can freely participate in. ECU November Business Summer School

Students can fast-track their business degree in November and gain a competitive edge by studying at Australia's top business school for quality. Teaching quality

ECU is committed to providing a five-star learning experience to its students and has maintained its long-standing 5-star rating for undergraduate teaching quality. It's now 17 straight years! (Good Universities Guide 2023)

ECU was also rated 5 stars for undergraduate and is rated #1 in Western Australia across all six survey categories for undergraduates.

For the third year in a row, ECU students have rated it as the top public university in Australia for their overall experience as an undergraduate. Department structure

School of Arts and Humanities 

From communications to criminology, this school offers a range of study options and is home to one of the world's best film and television schools, the Western Australian Screen Academy.

School of Business and Law 

The school is the top-ranked business school for quality in Australia (Australian Financial Review BOSS Best Business Schools List 2022) and is in the top 250 universities globally in the THE World University Rankings by Subject 2023 for business and economics. The school has also joined the elite group of the world's top business schools with accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

School of Engineering & Technology

Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA)

WAAPA is one of the leading performing arts academies in the world and offers a comprehensive range of performing arts training in Australia. Students achieve across acting, dance, music, design, arts management, or production.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

International students need to meet both academic and English-language requirements to be accepted into their chosen course. All English entry requirements will depend on the course and study level.

English requirements

Visit the English competency page for more information on types of English tests will meet entry requirements.

  • Standard undergraduate course entry requires an IELTS of 6.0 overall, with no band under 6.0.
  • Standard postgraduate coursework entry requires an IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no band under 6.0 

Undergraduate students 

International students must submit one of the following academic documents: 

  • Recognised secondary school results
  • Completion of one-year equivalent tertiary study from a recognised international or Australian institution
  • Completion of diploma program from a recognised international or Australian institution 

Postgraduate students

International students are required to have one or more of the following:

  • Bachelor's degree - from a recognised institution equivalent to Australia's bachelor level.
  • At least five years' professional work experience for select postgraduate business programmes (project management, MBA, international hospitality management, etc.). 
  • For postgraduate research - a 300-word research abstract of a proposed topic for students interested in research, alongside research experience, and/or citations.

Students can visit the ECU website for course-specific entry requirements or speak to an IDP education counsellor. 

Alternative Pathway Entry

For students who do not meet ECU's minimum entry requirements, Edith Cowan College (ECC) offers a range of study options, including:

  • Diploma pathways into undergraduate courses such as nursing, communications, counselling, science, IT, cyber security and engineering
  • Postgraduate Qualifying Program (PQP) for those wishing to pursue a master's degree with an undergraduate program does not meet entry
  • ELICOS can be packaged from 5-52 weeks, subject to a diagnostic test

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

ECU offers numerous scholarships and bursaries to international students.

International Undergraduate Scholarship 2023 & 2024

Students receive a 20 per cent tuition fee reduction for the duration of a bachelor course at ECU. This is available to future students from select countries applying for select undergraduate courses.

International Masters Scholarship 2023 & 2024

Future masters by coursework students from select countries are eligible for a 20 per cent tuition fee reduction on the first year's tuition fee on select programmes.

 International Undergraduate Merit Scholarship 2023 & 2024

A 20 per cent tuition reduction for the duration of the course is offered to prospective students from India, Pakistan, Kenya and other select countries, who are academically high achievers in their previous studies.

International Accommodation Bursary 2023

Live in comfort at the ECU Student Village. This bursary offers eligible students a 50 per cent reduction in accommodation fees at Edith Cowan Student Village, Mount Lawley. Limited places available, so students should apply now.

 Edith Cowan College Merit Pathway Scholarship 2023 & 2024

This scholarship is open to students who package their ECC Diploma with an eligible ECU Bachelor. The scholarship offers students who achieve a WAM of 75 or above in their ECC diploma a 20 per cent discount for the duration of their undergraduate degree at ECU.

Facilities

ECU is committed to ensuring that its students can develop their technical skills, hone their talents and have mastery of their craft, all while accessing facilities that cater to their specific needs. This is one of the many reasons students come to study at ECU. There are 101 reasons to choose ECU in total.

Security Operations Centre (SOC) 

Computing and technology students get first-hand experience in detecting, monitoring, and responding to cyber security threats from the largest security operations centre in the southern hemisphere. 

Securities and Markets Analytics and Research Teaching (SMART) Lab

This allows business students to have access in real-time to global financial market data and dual- screen terminals with Bloomberg and Thomson Reuters software, which are widely used by industry practitioners. 

Giant Super Labs 

ECU's new AUD 48-million-dollar science building houses high-tech laboratories in a 2,500 square metre space over two floors. The building design displays a periodic table, the largest in the world.

Moot Court 

Students can participate in mock trials, witness examination and cross-examination simulations in ECU's hybrid teaching space to develop professional skills in the legal world.

Spiegeltent

ECU is the first university in the world to have a Spiegeltent or mirror tent known as The Edith. This performance venue hosts many WAAPA events and is used during Fringe World Festival, an annual highlight in Perth that ECU and WAAPA sponsor. 

Art Gallery 25 and Spectrum Project Space

These galleries at the Mount Lawley campus allow art students to exhibit their artistic work, creative visions, and remarkable talents.

TV Studio and Broadcasting Suite

The Mount Lawley campus offers a dedicated TV studio and broadcasting suite where students can collaborate. It is specialised in scriptwriting, stage management and audio production.
