Overview

Florida Institute of Technology (Florida Tech) is an internationally recognized institution that provides a variety of degrees taught by industry-leading faculty.

Originally founded as Brevard Engineering College in 1958, Florida Tech has developed a reputation for outstanding quality in STEM subjects, earning the label ''Florida's STEM university.'' The institution is research-driven, boasting a hands-on, practical learning environment that prepares students for careers of the future.

Florida Tech takes pride in its diverse student body, with international students comprising about one-fourth of the student population and representing over 80 countries. International students are made to feel comfortable on campus through various services and events including counseling, career guidance and an annual international festival showing the importance of cultural diversity at Florida Tech, which is also a proud supporter of the #YouAreWelcomeHere campaign.

Florida Tech is ranked a Tier One Best National University by U.S. News & World Report and is located in Melbourne, Florida, a popular travel destination. This gives students an outstanding setting in which they can enjoy life outside their studies with events, over 150 student organizations and easy access to the famous Florida coastline. Florida Tech athletic teams compete in NCAA Division II across a range of sports.

What's new

Florida Tech has surged in the latest edition of the influential Global Employability University Ranking and Survey (GEURS), rising to 17th among U.S. schools on the list and 76th overall among all 250 ranked universities.

The rankings achieved by Florida Tech in the most recent GEURS report represent a rise of more than 85 spots since 2021 – establishing it as the fastest riser in the 2022-23 rankings.

''We are proud of this ranking, which reflects Florida Tech's focus on empowering learners to excel in their careers,'' said Marco Carvalho, the university's executive vice president, provost and COO. ''This approach, now anchored by our STEM philosophy and enhanced by Florida Tech's hands-on pedagogy, means our students are flying planes, building rocket engines, fighting simulated cyberattacks and doing so much more – starting year one.''

Of all the institutions in the Sunshine State, Florida Tech was one of only two to gain a place in the GEURS report – with the other being the University of Florida, at 167th.

The GEURS report is a globally renowned higher education report which is built on responses from almost 100,000 leading operational managers at top global companies, and published via Times Higher Education (THE).

Department structure

Department structure

Florida Tech has a variety of programs spread across four distinct colleges, each with a strong academic focus.

College of Engineering and Science

Florida Tech's largest college, the College of Engineering and Science, offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs in the various areas of applied science, computing, education, engineering, mathematics, the sciences and technology. Students at all levels collaborate with expert faculty on research, contracts and projects of international significance.

College of Aeronautics

Recognized as one of the top university-based aviation programs in the nation, the College of Aeronautics has earned an international reputation for excellence in educating and preparing aviation professionals. About 500 students are enrolled in flight and nonflight programs at Florida Tech's Melbourne campus.

College of Psychology and Liberal Arts

The College of Psychology and Liberal Arts offers bachelor's degrees in various subjects including applied behavior analysis, forensic psychology, humanities, multiplatform journalism, psychology and strategic communication, as well as master's degrees in applied behavior analysis, global strategic communication, industrial/organizational psychology, organizational behavior management and organizational leadership.

Bisk College of Business

The Bisk College of Business provides a strong foundation to prepare students for careers of the future. It covers essential business disciplines and engages students in the practical application of business, requiring them to think critically about modern business issues. Graduates emerge well-prepared to manage innovation and change, start and lead businesses, and effectively respond to global business challenges.

Entry requirements

Eligibility

International Students

Florida Tech reviews applications on a rolling basis. However, International applicants should submit their applications at least two weeks prior to the I-20 deadline for the semester for which they are applying. Fall I-20 Deadline: July 1, Spring I-20 Deadline: November 1. Some graduate programs may have earlier deadlines. Please review the graduate admission requirements for details.

Undergraduate requirements

Undergraduate students are admitted directly to their major and start in their major classes right away. When evaluating undergraduate applications, the Office of Admission will carefully consider the applicant's readiness for their program of study. International students must submit the following documents to be considered for admission:

  • Completed Common Application or Florida Tech application
  • Secondary school transcripts
    • Transcripts must include at least three full years of students' most recent secondary school grades, including any courses in progress.
    • If a student's transcript is written in a language other than English, they should provide a word-for-word English translation along with an original transcript.
    • Transcripts uploaded by the student are considered unofficial. Transcripts provided directly from a secondary school are considered official. Official transcripts are not required for an application but are required after acceptance.
  • Terminating or qualifying examination results or certificates (if applicable)
  • Optional: personal essay and letter of recommendation

International applicants are not required to provide standardized test (SAT or ACT) scores. English proficiency is not required for an admission decision but is needed before the issuance of immigration documents (I-20).

Postgraduate requirements

Students must hold a bachelor's degree in a related field if they wish to enroll in a master's degree program at Florida Tech. Applicants must also have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 as an undergraduate to be considered for admission to a master's degree program at Florida Tech. Facilities

Over 40 campus venues are available at Florida Tech, and the institution has many notable facilities, including auditoriums, conference rooms, classrooms, lecture halls, computer labs, banquet facilities, athletic spaces, a 500-seat performing arts center, large and small chapels, botanical gardens and outdoor green spaces.

Charles and Ruth Clemente Center for Sports and Recreation

A 62,000-square foot facility housing the varsity gym, intramural gym, weight room, group fitness room, racquetball court and healthy cafe/eatery.

Panthereum Outdoor Amphitheater

The outdoor amphitheater is an ideal venue for concerts and other performances, with a small stage looking out over a green, open lawn.

Gleason Performing Arts Center

A theater-style, multi-use facility surrounded by a botanical garden and used for all varieties of professional and community productions, as well as large-scale meetings, lectures and video conferencing.

Accommodation

Over 27 residential facilities are available at Florida Tech, with residence hall and apartment communities providing a variety of amenities, including over 70 cable and HD channels, telephone and voicemail service, laundry facilities, ethernet connection and wireless internet.

Finances

Undergraduate Panther Fund Merit Scholarship

Florida Tech offers partial academic merit scholarships that go up to USD 12,500 annually to undergraduate international students. Any student who applies is automatically considered for scholarships and will be notified of their scholarship award upon admission. Florida Tech does not offer need-based financial aid or full tuition scholarships to international students. Merit scholarships require recipients to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 at Florida Tech for annual renewal.

Graduate Funding

Florida Tech does not offer scholarships to graduate students. Graduate Student Assistantships (GSAs) are available in a minimal capacity and are offered at the department's discretion. GSA funding is strictly determined and approved by the specific department. Before applying to a GSA position, students must contact the department to secure an advisor.

Athletic Scholarships

Florida Tech athletic scholarships (NCAA Division II) are awarded by individual coaches via the Athletics Department.

Legacy Grant

Children of Florida Tech alumni enrolling in full-time undergraduate programs are eligible for a USD 2,500 grant, renewable for up to four years and given in addition to any other merit scholarships.

Family Grant

Siblings of students currently enrolled at Florida Tech are eligible for a USD 2,500 grant, renewable for up to four years and given in addition to any other merit scholarships, with all sibling students receiving the grant when enrolled at the same time.
