Overview

Georgian College is one of Canada's highest-ranking Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology and offers its students a comprehensive program of vocational and skills-based courses spanning a wide range of professional sectors. The college offers courses and qualifications at many levels, from apprenticeship training to college diplomas, bachelor degrees, and graduate certificates.

Established in 1967, Georgian College has been delivering high-quality practical education for over 50 years and currently supports around 13,000 full-time students, including a lively community of 4,500 international students representing over 85 countries worldwide. Courses are distributed across the colleges' seven Ontario campuses. The largest campus is situated in Barrie, a modern and growing city of around 150,000 population, nestled between the shore of Lake Simcoe and Georgian Bay. All campuses are within easy distance of the state's capital Toronto.

The college is well known for the quality of its education, with highly respected training programs in areas such as automotive business business and management computer studies community safety design and visual arts engineering technology and environmental studies health and wellness tourism, hospitality and recreation human services liberal arts Indigenous studies and marine studies. Georgian College fosters a strong culture of entrepreneurship, and also enjoys one of the highest graduate employment rates in Ontario.

What's New

Georgian College is a future-focused institution that invests time and planning in developing and enhancing the service which can be delivered to its students and ensures that the services provided are effective and relevant to an ever-changing world. The college implements its improvements through a series of ongoing strategy plans and has recently developed an initiative to address the mental health and wellbeing of its current and future students.

The college is committed to the long-term health and wellbeing of its community, and over the past year, has designed a comprehensive and holistic scheme to act as a roadmap to navigate the uncertainties of a changing society. Georgian College's 2020-2023 Strategic Plan uses environmental assessment and a consultation phase with 42 points of engagement, as well as a sample of around 800 staff and students across various campuses, and identifies the following five strategic pillars where efforts will be focused.

  • Institutional structure: Organizational planning and policy

  • Mental health literacy and promoting wellbeing

  • Self-management and coping skills

  • Supports and services

  • Crisis management

Teaching quality

Teaching quality

Students at Georgian College benefit from studying a continually updated curriculum that incorporates a range of teaching methods, emphasizing practical, hands-on learning, and encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship. Most programs offer formal work experience training as part of the course, and these opportunities range from paid internships to field placements.

Teaching staff hold advanced qualifications in their subject areas, representing a wealth of industry experience and professional practice. Many of Georgian College's faculty members have experience teaching and working overseas, and are able to effectively communicate their expertise to students from all international backgrounds. Many also continue to develop their professional practice alongside their teaching commitments at the college, and students can gain important industry insights as well as access to professional contacts.

The average class size is around 26 students, ensuring plenty of contact time with staff, and a more personalized approach towards tuition. There are also remote learning opportunities available, allowing students to achieve a Georgian College education from anywhere in the world.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Georgian College is considered to be a moderately selective institution, with a relatively high acceptance rate, and with three yearly intake points for most courses. For most programs, it is required that students be of 19 years of age and must hold a Grade 12 diploma or equivalent. Some courses may require additional prerequisites in the form of an essay or portfolio. There are many alternative pathways to enrolment, and applications are considered on an individual basis.

International applicants must provide evidence of English language proficiency. There are several accepted criteria that may be found on the college's English Language Proficiency Requirements page. Applications are completed online, and prospective students are advised to familiarize themselves with any important dates and deadlines before submitting.

Facilities

Georgian College's seven campuses each contain a suite of modernized individual and group study spaces and computer laboratories, with fully equipped libraries where students have free access to books, journals, and digital resources. The college has excellent sports facilities, with fitness centers at each location, and a host of sports teams including volleyball, badminton, football, basketball golf, and soccer.

Georgian College has a variety of options for on-campus accommodation with residences offered at the Barrie, Orillia, and Owen Sound campuses. There is a wide selection of food and drink vendors, with many cafes, canteens, and coffee shops ensuring that students stay refreshed and refueled.

Access to these facilities is granted via the ONEcard, Georgian College's official identification card, which conveniently serves as a library card, printer card, fitness centre pass, bus pass, and payment card for food and drinks vendors.

Scholarships & funding

Georgian College understands that the cost of education can be a significant consideration for aspiring learners, and is dedicated to keeping its tuition fees accessible to motivated students from all economic backgrounds. The college provides many financial support options through their financial services department, including guidance for securing low-cost housing, help with budgeting and fee payment, as well as access to part-time job opportunities.

Additionally, the college awards more than 650 scholarships and bursaries to new and returning students each year, with a value of over CAD 750,000 in scholarships and CAD 3 million in bursaries. The average value of a scholarship is around CAD 1,000, and recipients may be selected based on the following criteria:
