Overview

Overview

Located in the vibrant Canadian city of Winnipeg, the International College of Manitoba (ICM) is the smarter move for anyone seeking to become a graduate of one of Canada's leading universities, the University of Manitoba. ICM provides students with a soft landing to live and study in Canada. Its programs, resources and support from faculty, staff, and peers are delivered in a customized learning environment tailored to fully prepare students.

Upon successful completion of the University Transfer Program (UTP) Stage II, students can apply to progress to the second year of one of many undergraduate degree programs at the University of Manitoba (UM).

ICM is located on UM's Fort Garry campus, about ten kilometers from downtown Winnipeg in the heartland of Canada. Winnipeg is a welcoming, cosmopolitan city with an affordable cost of living, and ranks as one of the most liveable cities in the country, especially for young professionals, newcomers, and entrepreneurs (Globe and Mail, 2023).

There are shops, restaurants and a lively arts and theater scene, with wonderful lakes and vast open landscapes offering many outdoor activities. Winnipeg's skies are among the clearest in North America, and the city has some of the cleanest water in Canada.

UM's co-op programs combine classroom knowledge with paid work experience, and graduates may even have the opportunity to apply for a post-graduation work permit and permanent residency after earning their degree.

Diversity is a celebrated part of Canadian society, and international students make up over 20 percent of the university population, representing over 120 countries. Because ICM is located on the UM campus, its students benefit from shared use of all UM facilities, and are even able to join student leadership groups and events, giving them opportunities to socialize beyond the walls of the classroom, and to ease the transition between secondary school and undergraduate study.

What's new

What's new

Thanks to virtual technology, it's never been easier for prospective students to take a look at the environment and facilities offered by the ICM campus from the comfort and convenience of their own home.

The Virtual 360° Tour is available online and allows future students to explore select areas of the Fort Garry campus and accommodation, using a computer or mobile device from anywhere in the world using 360° photography similar to Google Street View. The virtual tour also features videos, photo slideshows, area descriptions and an interactive map. This is particularly useful for international students living a long distance from Canada, who would find it difficult to attend one of the college's in-person open day events. They are able to become acquainted with the buildings and campus layout, so that they can be familiar with their new learning environment upon arrival at the start of their first year. The 360° Virtual Tour is live and available to view online.

ICM offers Stage I and II in a specialized University Transfer Program (UTP), depending on the level of study and final grades achieved at the point of application.

Prospective ICM students who have completed Year 11 studies or equivalent, or who do not meet the academic requirements to join UTP Stage II, can enrol in UTP Stage I. This foundation program is comprised of eight pre-university level courses studied over two terms, bringing students up to Year 12 level, where they can then complete UTP Stage II in their chosen pathway.

Applicants who have completed Year 12 studies or equivalent can apply to UTP Stage II. This program comprises ten first year university-level courses, studied over the course of three terms, and upon completion, students can apply to progress to the second year of their UM undergraduate degree.

There are seven UTP Stage II pathway programs for students at ICM:

  • UTP Stage II: Agricultural and Food Science
  • UTP Stage II: Arts
  • UTP Stage II: Business
  • UTP Stage II: Engineering
  • UTP Stage II: Environment, Earth and Resources
  • UTP Stage II: Recreation Management and Community Development
  • UTP Stage II: Science

Students have a huge range of undergraduate degree options to choose from at UM, based on their choice of UTP pathway. Additionally, students who study at ICM will develop a toolbox of transferable skills which become an asset for them during their further studies and future career.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

ICM provides a supportive route to undergraduate study in Canada, and students from a wide range of academic and international backgrounds are encouraged to apply. There are different academic and English language entry requirements for UTP Stages I and II, which prospective students must meet in order to gain admission into ICM.

For UTP Stage I, the standard pre-requisite is successful completion of Year 11 with the required grades. This includes, for example, three passes at General Certificate of Education (GCE) O-Level, with a grade of D or better, or completion of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Year One Diploma with at least 18 points.

For UTP Stage II, the standard pre-requisite to entry is successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent. This may include passes from two GCE A-Level subjects with a minimum of D grades, though two AS-Level subjects may be combined for one pass. For those using the IB, the pre-requisite is 22.

Since international applicants might not be using these two assessment systems, the ICM website publishes a list of country-by-country grade level equivalents.

There are also admission requirements for English language proficiency, which are published on the ICM's website. Applicants must demonstrate a level equivalent to an overall score of 5.5 on the IELTS academic test, with all band scores minimum of 5.0 for entry to UTP Stage I and II. Applicants who earned an academic IELTS result of 5.0 with no band less than 4.5 can apply for mixed entry and begin UTP Stage I or Stage II with the addition of one academic English course, to be taken during the first term of study. There are several accepted English language tests and ICM's website provides a full list.

Fees & funding

Fees & funding

Fees for international students in the 2024/25 academic year are:

  • UTP Stage I fees are set at CAD 20,378 over a duration of two terms.
  • UTP Stage II fees are set at CAD 21,414 over a duration of three terms.

Additionally, there is a compulsory student services fee of CAD 112 per term, as well as an annual sports and recreation membership fee of CAD 272 and a medical insurance fee of CAD 1,377 per year. For full details, students can visit ICM's tuition and fees page.

In addition to tuition, students will need approximately CAD 14,000-16,000 to meet their living expenses each year.

This estimate is based on the annual amount needed for a student to live comfortably in a homestay accommodation, with typical spending across food, transport, study materials, recreation, and entertainment. Individual student expenses will vary, and these budget guidelines does not include significant expenses such as winter clothing, buying a laptop, furniture, or other large, one-time purchases.

ICM also has a number of scholarship and bursaries to reward new and current students, including entrance scholarships and a family bursary for siblings.

Graduate outcomes

ICM's programs offer a pathway into a massive range of undergraduate degree courses at UM. Students enhance their employability by building skillsets and gaining critical experience that will help them while looking for graduate employment.

The University of Manitoba also has a robust careers and employment service, including a dedicated online careers portal, mentoring schemes, CV writing support, and a program of careers workshops and events organized throughout the year. Graduates join UM's network of over 145,000 alumni in over 140 countries around the world, and benefit from access to their network of sponsors and professional contacts.

After completing second year at UM, ICM graduates also gain the opportunity to participate in a co-operative education program, where they combine theoretical knowledge with paid work experience to further enhance skills and experience. These co-op programs provide practical training which sets students apart when applying for industry positions.
