New nightclub

Nipissing University's brand new On The Rocks nightclub opened in September 2023. This vibrant hub of community provides students with a safe, exciting venue on-campus to enjoy a fun night out.

Interprofessional Simulation Centre

NU's new Interprofessional Simulation Centre provides the university's healthcare students with an immersive, interactive learning environment. This high-tech centre has been carefully designed to mimic a number of real-world scenarios and settings, enhancing skills and competency through both emergency and procedural training.

Bioenterprise Canada partnership

NU has become a Knowledge and Development Partner of Canada's Food and Agri-tech Engine, with a focus on research in complex environmental challenges both locally and globally. As a result, students in related fields are able to access mentorship, partnership and funding support through Bioenterprise Canada.

Homeshare partnership

NU has teamed up with SpacesShared, an online home-sharing platform, to provide reputable and affordable housing options to students. Through this service, students who prefer to live off-campus can apply to live in a home-share and will be safely matched with approved community members.

NU's Faculty of Education and Professional Studies is split into six schools, through which students are able to enrol on thirteen degree programs:

  • School of Business (BBA)
  • School of Criminal Justice (BA)
  • School of Nursing (BScN)
  • School of Physical and Health Education (BPHE)
  • School of Social Work (BSw)
  • Schulich School of Education: consecutive (Bed) (BBA, BFA, BPHE, BA, BSc with concurrent Bed)

It is possible to major or minor in many subjects and students can also choose specific electives, enabling them to tailor their course to their personal and/or career goals.

Despite being a primarily undergraduate institution, Nipissing University also offers seven graduate degree programs:

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Entry requirements at Nipissing University vary between courses, so students are advised to check the specifics for their desired degree program before application. The below is intended as a general guide.

Undergraduate degree programs

Generally, students enrolling on an undergraduate degree program at NU must have completed one of the following, or hold an equivalent qualification:

  • International Baccalaureate diploma with a minimum final grade of 24
  • A minimum grade average of 70 percent across their previous studies

Some courses may require students to have studied a related subject as part of their high school qualifications.

Graduate degree programs

Students enrolling on a master's degree program at NU must hold a closely related undergraduate honours degree with at least a 75 percent average, a 2:1, or equivalent.

Students enrolling on a PhD must hold a closely related master's degree with a minimum A-standing (or equivalent).

English language requirements

International students originating from a country where the dominant language is not English will be required to demonstrate their English language proficiency.

For most undergraduate degree programs, students must hold a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.5 with no band score lower than 6.0 (or equivalent qualification).

Students enrolling on a BScN require an IELTS score of 7.0 with no band less than 6.5

Graduate students and students studying on a BEd degree program require an IELTS score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.5.

There are some exemptions to the English language policy, including the opportunity to enroll on an English for Academic Purposes course with one of the university's approved partners.

Nipissing University students enjoy fantastic facilities designed to enrich their learning experience and promote ground-breaking research. These include hi-tech IT services, state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment, an interprofessional simulation centre, airy and bright art studios, and expansive greenhouses.

Student Centre

NU's modern student centre includes everything students need to make the most of university life, including friendly communal areas, study rooms, a restaurant and a nightclub.

Athletics Centre

NU's Robert J Surtees Student Athletics Centre is considered amongst the best in Ontario, boasting volleyball, basketball, squash and badminton courts, as well as an artificial turf field. Fitness studios, weight and cardio rooms are available for gym enthusiasts, and the campus trail system is perfect for hiking, skiing and snowshoeing.

With fitness classes, varsity teams, intramurals and club sports teams available, there's room for every student to get involved in a sport they love.

Library

NU's Harris Learning Library offers an expansive selection of books, media, journals and archives alongside a wealth of digital resources. Students can make use of quiet study areas and computer zones to aid their studies, with the library's academic search tool providing access to over 23 million items across Ontario.

Accommodation

NU offers four award-winning residences just minutes' walk from the main campus. All first-year students applying directly from high school are guaranteed a private bedroom in residence.

Residence fees typically cost around CAD 6,400 – CAD 7,140 per year, with the option to add on meal plans to enjoy nutritional meals on-campus.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

Nipissing University offers its students over CAD 4.9 million in scholarships, bursaries and awards.

Undergraduates

International undergraduate students may be eligible for a range of scholarships, bursaries and awards at NU.

Guaranteed Entrance Scholarships

International students with a grade average above 80 percent are automatically considered for guaranteed entrance scholarships, so there is no need to go through an application process. This scholarship is renewable for the first four years of undergraduate study.

Guaranteed entrance scholarships at NU range from CAD 1,000 per year to the full cost of the course's domestic-rate tuition fees which is 23'000 CAD per Academic year for every program offered.

Schulich Scholarships

The Schulich Scholarship is awarded to selected students entering their first year on any undergraduate program within the Schulich School of Education and has a value of CAD 7,500.

Eligibility requirements include a minimum 80 percent grade average.

Work-study program

Students can also make use of NU's international work-study program, providing part-time, on-campus employment to eligible upper-year international students who can prove financial need.

Graduates

Graduate Scholarship

The Nipissing University Graduate Scholarship provides funding in the value of CAD 5,000 or CAD 10,000 to select, eligible graduate students with a minimum grade average of 80 percent. This funding is designed to support students in research that significantly contributes to their program of study, typically resulting in a thesis or major research paper. Students are automatically considered for this scholarship and do not need to apply.

The university also offers a number of other funding opportunities to eligible graduate students, including:

  • Graduate student travel funding, with a value of up to CAD 500
  • Nipissing University Research Fellowship
  • Graduate Teaching Assistantship
  • Graduate Research Assistantship

External loans, scholarships and other funding opportunities are also available.
