Overview

Ideally situated in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne in the North East of England, Northumbria University is a research-intensive modern university that unlocks potential for all, changing lives regionally, nationally and internationally.

Northumbria's transformative strategy, combining a focus on research excellence and social mobility, earned them the accolade of ‘University of the Year 2022' in the prestigious Times Higher Education THE Awards and Modern University of the Year (Daily Mail University Guide, 2024).

Ranked 23rd in the UK for Research Power (REF, 2021), Northumbria's research ethos informs teaching in an ambitious academic learning community. Students are equipped to apply and develop their knowledge in ‘real-world' situations, which is why it ranks among the Top 25 in the UK for the number of graduates in skilled jobs (Graduate Outcomes 2019/20).

Since 2005, almost £300m has been invested in Northumbria's campuses, including a Digital Commons with 24/7 access to over 100 PCs, four libraries providing 2,000 study spaces, over 1.4 million print and e-books, 24/7 access, and IT Support. Other facilities include a flagship £30m Sport Central, boasting state-of-the-art facilities, including a six-lane 25m swimming pool, a running track, sports halls, and a fitness centre.

Northumbria Students' Union (NSU) has been voted by students as a Top 20 Best Student Union (StudentCrowd Awards, 2023), with outstanding facilities comprising bars, entertainment venues, coffee shops, workspaces, chill-out zones and meeting rooms. Ran by students for students, NSU offers a range of services and activities, including over 100 clubs and societies covering a range of interests and cultural beliefs, as well as volunteering opportunities.

With an established community of over 12,000 international students and 236,000 Northumbria alumni worldwide, Northumbria University is a welcoming and attractive option for many.

What's new

What's new

Northumbria University has recently announced campus investment that aligns with the university strategy for 2030 and beyond. Work commenced in Summer 2023 with an ongoing period of investment in and securing:

  • Centre for Health and Society Equity (CHASE): This brand-new building is situated to the north of City Campus and provides state-of-the-art teaching facilities, clinical skills laboratories, and simulated environments.
  • North East Space Skills and Technology Centre (NESST): A £50m world-leading space skills, research, and technology centre developed by with investment from the UK Space Agency and Lockheed Martin. NESST will house world-leading space experts and unite industry with academia to transform the UK space economy.
  • Heart of Campus: Refurbishing the Students' Union, updating the exterior of the library and repurposing the existing Sandyford Building.

A blend of on-campus and online learning means core learning occurs on campus through interactive group sessions such as seminars, workshops, specialist lab sessions and supporting tutorials. This is supported by online content and materials, enabling students to access learning at a time that suits them via their user-friendly virtual learning environment, Blackboard Ultra.

Northumbria places 14th in the UK for 'value added' for students whilst at the university. Value added is an analysis of students' degree results with their entry qualifications to show how effectively they are taught (The Guardian University Guide, 2024).

Department structure

Department structure

A wide variety of courses are offered at Northumbria University across various academic departments, including:

  • Architecture & Built Environment: Housed in impressive new facilities and focusing on the teaching, research and enterprise of Architecture, Interior Architecture, Quantity and Building Surveying, Real Estate and Housing. Ranked 11th in the UK for Research Power (REF 2021).
  • Computer & Information Sciences: This is a leading department with an award-winning, state-of-the-art £7m building. It features leading work in computer science, games, animation and visual effects, computer forensics and security, network technology, website development, library management, and data and information sciences. It is ranked 12th in the UK for Research Power (REF 2021)
  • Newcastle Business School (NBS): NBS is globally recognised for offering some of the best business-related courses in the UK and is home to a specialist Business Clinic designed to give students hands-on business experience. NBS was also the first Business School in Europe to be awarded double AACSB accreditation.
  • Northumbria Law School: Northumbria's £70m state-of-the-art city centre location provides an outstanding learning environment. Professional facilities include courtrooms, an on-site law practice library, and a multi-award-winning Student Law Office, which provides students with hands-on law experiences.
  • Northumbria School of Design: Partners include household names such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Microsoft, Mars, Unilever, and Nike. The School of Design also boasts an illustrious design alumni list, including Sir Jonathan Ive (former Senior Vice President of Apple) and Rob Law MBE (Founder of Trunki). It is ranked 4th in the UK for Research Power in Art and Design (REF 2021).
  • Nursing: Excellent reputation for collaboration with key partners like the NHS, and the department is also well-established with highly rated Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) approved programmes.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Northumbria University accepts and welcomes applicants from the UK and worldwide with a range of qualifications. Students who have taken qualifications outside the UK can find out how these compare by looking at the University's breakdown of accepted qualifications by country.

Northumbria expects you to have a university-recognized language test such as IELTS, PTE Academic TOEFL, or an approved equivalent. For a detailed list of accepted qualifications as evidence of English language ability, click here.

Please note that acceptance of these qualifications is entirely at the discretion of the University's admissions team. You may be asked for additional evidence of English language ability if your programme or visa requires it.

Facilities

Northumbria University provides students access to outstanding study, research, and leisure facilities. Such investment has created state-of-the-art facilities in the heart of Newcastle's vibrant city environment.

Students can access modern laboratories, workshops, CAD suites, media labs, and modern classrooms with all the necessary IT facilities to support them with the tools they need to achieve the best education possible. A 24/7 library provides access to learning facilities anytime, and the award-winning building holds the UK Customer Service Excellence (CSE) standard.

Northumbria also offers solid and unique facilities for all their subjects, giving students the practical experience needed in industry. Specialist course facilities include the Business Clinic, Design Studios, Clinical Skills, Computing Labs, Architecture Studies, Crime Scene House, Engineering Labs and Student Law Office.

Northumbria University offers a diverse range of accommodation options, each designed to cater to different student needs.
