Suffolk University is a historic, four-year private university attracting a diverse range of students from around the United States and the world. Entry requirements

What to Submit

International students need to submit a range of documents to enroll at Suffolk University:

  • Common Application or Suffolk Application
  • USD 50 application fee
  • Essay and personal statement
  • Official college/university transcripts (in English or with an accompanying translation) from all institutions attended
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Proof of English Proficiency test flexible options. The university requires only one of the following:
  • TOEFL, IELTS, DuoLingo, and PTE Scores
  1. TOEFL iBT score (minimum required score is a 79)
  2. The university will accept the TOEFL Home Edition version as well as the TOEFL iTP for China
  3. TOEFL ESSENTIALS Score (minimum required score is an 8.5)
  4. IELTS score (minimum required score is a 6.5)
  5. DUOLINGO* English Test-DET (minimum score of 105)
  6. PTE- Academic with a minimum score of 54
  • SAT or ACT Scores: A SAT EBRW score of at least 520 or ACT Composite score of 19 and higher proves English proficiency. SAT and ACT scores can be self-reported, but are not mandatory.
  • International Baccalaureate (IB), AP, IGCSE, GCSE and AS/A-level
  1. IB HL English Predicted scores (if provided by the high school)
  2. First Language English Exams in the IGCSE or GCSE or AS/A-Level Predicted/Actual results
  3. B average performance in AP ENG LANG and COMP or AP ENG LIT and COMP course
  • Transfer Students Currently at a US Institution: If students have taken the equivalent of the university's WRI 101/102 course with a B or better average, they can waive the test of English proficiency requirement.
  • Gao Kao Exam: Gao Kao: students from mainland China who have taken the Gaokao exam where English was one of the three areas tested, may arrange an interview via the InitialView website or contact the Office of Undergraduate Admission.
  • Test Exemptions: Exempt if the student is from a country where English is the First and Official Language. If they are unsure if their country qualifies, please complete the Test of English Proficiency Waiver Request form.

Scholarships & funding

There is a proud tradition of welcoming international students at Suffolk University. The dynamic, culturally diverse campus in the heart of Boston is built on a belief that quality education should be as affordable as possible. The university aims to help students estimate the cost of their study and then determine eligibility for financial aid, and identify other opportunities to finance education such as scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study.

International students will be automatically considered for merit-based financial aid when they are admitted to the university. Generally, awards are based on previous academic achievement, work experience, standardized test scores and how well they fit in their programs of study.

All students are automatically considered for scholarships upon applying.
