Suffolk University is a historic, four-year private university attracting a diverse range of students from around the United States and the world. The Division of Student Success offers various support mechanisms, including:

  • Undergraduate Academic Advising – Academic advisors help students balance personal interests, curriculum, and graduation requirements.
  • Career Development – The Center for Career Equity, Development & Success supports and empowers students and alumni with ongoing information and training for a competitive edge in the job market.

College of Arts & Sciences

Suffolk University's College of Arts & Sciences prepares students to succeed academically and make vital contributions to their chosen profession after graduation. It blends classroom learning with co-curricular activities and hands-on internships, taking students off campus to experience the wider world. Students learn via practical experiences to prepare them to make an impact in their careers.

Sawyer Business School

Students are taught by renowned faculty who have a range of experiences as entrepreneurs, leaders, managers, and innovators. Suffolk Law School

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

What to Submit

International students need to submit a range of documents to gain admission to Suffolk University:

  1. Common Application or Suffolk Application
  2. USD 50 application fee
  3. Essay and personal statement
  4. Official high school transcript or GED/HiSET results (in English or with an accompanying translation)
  5. Letter of recommendation
  6. Proof of English Proficiency, such as:
  • TOEFL, IELTS, DuoLingo, and PTE Scores
    • TOEFL iBT score (minimum required score is a 79)
    • The university will accept the TOEFL Home Edition version as well as the TOEFL iTP for China
    • TOEFL ESSENTIALS Score (minimum required score is an 8.5)
    • IELTS score (minimum required score is a 6.5)
    • DUOLINGO* English Test-DET (minimum score of 105)
    • PTE- Academic with a minimum score of 54
  • SAT or ACT Scores

A SAT EBRW score of at least 520 or ACT Composite score of 19 and higher proves English proficiency. SAT and ACT scores can be self-reported, but are not mandatory.

  • International Baccalaureate (IB), AP, IGCSE, GCSE and AS/A-level
    • IB HL English Predicted scores (if provided by the high school)
    • First Language English Exams in the IGCSE or GCSE or AS/A-Level Predicted/Actual results
    • B average performance in AP ENG LANG and COMP or AP ENG LIT and COMP course
  • Transfer Students Currently at a US Institution

If students have taken the equivalent of the university's WRI 101/102 course (labeled at other US colleges as ENG 101/102 or Composition 1/2) with a B or better average, they can waive the test of English proficiency requirement.

  • Gao Kao Exam

Gao Kao: students from mainland China who have taken the Gaokao exam where English was one of the three areas tested, may arrange an interview via the InitialView website or contact the Office of Undergraduate Admission.

  • Test Exemptions

Exempt if the student is from a country where English is the First and Official Language. If they are unsure if their country qualifies, please complete the Test of English Proficiency Waiver Request form.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

There is a proud tradition of welcoming international students at Suffolk University. The dynamic, culturally diverse campus in the heart of Boston is built on a belief that quality education should be as affordable as possible. The university aims to help students estimate the cost of their study and then determine eligibility for financial aid, and identify other opportunities to finance education such as scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study.

International students will be automatically considered for merit-based financial aid when they are admitted to the university. Generally, awards are based on previous academic achievement, work experience, standardized test scores and how well they fit in their programs of study.

Suffolk awards over USD 100 million of financial aid to its students each academic year, with over 95 percent of new enrollees receiving some form of financial aid.
