Overview

The University of Newcastle, Australia is a leading institution with a reputation for high-quality teaching and learning as well as exciting, contemporary academic programs. Students are taught by academics who are leaders in their field and graduate ready to make an impact across the globe.

The university is a research-intensive institution, ranked in the top 175 universities in the world (QS World University Rankings 2024). It excels in subject areas such as automation and control, mining and mineral engineering, nursing, architecture, education, and many more, offering a total of 12 subjects ranked inside the world's top 200 (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022). It is ranked 30th in the world for Impact (Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, 2023), and 95 per cent of its research is ''at'' or ''above world standard'', according to the 2018 Excellence in Research Australia report.

Those who choose to study at the University of Newcastle, gain opportunities for additional post-study work opportunities. The Australian Government allows students who meet study and skills criteria to stay temporarily in Australia after they complete their study and gain valuable work experience. To promote living and working in regional areas, students are eligible to stay for up to three years to seven years depending on the level of Australian study qualification.

Newcastle and Central Coast locations have a lot of benefits for international graduates. Each has the variety of amenities of a large city, with fantastic modern campuses supported by a friendly team of service staff and resources. International scholarships are also available. What's new

University of Newcastle's Q Building awarded world-leading 6 Star rating

The University of Newcastle's Q Building has become the first building in regional NSW to achieve a 6 Star Green Star ‘Design and As Built' certified rating. This is the highest available rating by the Green Building Council of Australia, and sets a rigorous international standard for design and construction.

The new building represent an investment of AUD 25 million and opened in June, as phase one of the institution's new Honeysuckle City Campus.

NUmates wins Excellence in Student Engagement award

A University of Newcastle program to engage international and domestic students through a range of activities has received a national award for Excellence in Student Engagement.

The university's NUmates program has been recognised for fostering an amazing student experience, at the tenth annual Association for Tertiary Education Management (ATEM) awards.

Determined to ensure students who couldn't return to their friends and families at the end of 2020 would be connected and supported, the team created a Summer Support campaign with content arranged across four key areas: support services, food banks, free and fun activities in Newcastle, the Central Coast and Sydney, and COVID updates.

Vice Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky said that the win was fantastic recognition for a great, student-led initiative.

Department structure

Department structure

The University of Newcastle is comprised of three colleges:

College of Engineering, Science and Environment 

The college focuses on subjects in the fields of engineering, science and the environment. The college aims to equip students with the skills necessary to develop innovative solutions that have a positive impact on society. Industry practice is actively incorporated into the curricula of the college and programs covered include environmental science development studies architecture data science maths and psychology. There are five schools in the college:

  • School of Architecture and Built Environment 

  • School of Engineering 

  • School of Environmental and Life Sciences 

  • School of Information and Physical Sciences

  • School of Psychological Sciences

College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing

The college looks to develop students into excellent healthcare professionals and researchers who can make significant contributions to their field. The college is noted for its innovative educational approach and the quality of the research that it produces. The schools that make up the college are:

  • School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy

  • School of Health Science

  • School of Medicine and Public Health 

  • School of Nursing and Midwifery

College of Human and Social Futures

This college is renowned for its teaching quality and research, as well as a focus on the development of students' professional skills. The college is home to 17,000 students, including master's and doctoral degree candidates. The subject focus areas for the college include business education management social sciences art and law. Schools in the college are:

How to apply

How to apply

Undergraduate and Postgraduate Applicants

For information on the university's international application process, prospective students are encouraged to visit the university website.

Online

For undergraduate as well as postgraduate programs, if international students have internet access, they can apply through the university's Online Direct Admissions tool. Students can save their online application after they have started and revisit later.

In order to apply, students will need to produce certified or original documents listed below. Students' application will only be processed when the university has received these documents:

  • Academic transcript

  • Letters of work experience

  • Completion certificate

  • CV/resume

PhD Applicants

Campuses

Newcastle City

NUspace is an AUD 95 million education precinct in Newcastle's CBD, utilising the latest in technology as well as innovation in both teaching and learning to provide a world-class student experience.

At Honeysuckle, Q Building provides state-of-the-art facilities for the School of Creative Industries (SOCI) and the Integrated Innovation Network (I2N) Hub, strengthening the university's presence in the Newcastle CBD.

Callaghan (Newcastle)

The original campus, Callaghan is well connected to regional employers and industry, including the John Hunter Hospital and Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI). It is the central hub for education, humanities, social science, and science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM), nursing and health.

Ourimbah and Gosford (Central Coast)

The Ourimbah campus offers programs in business, education, humanities and social science, oral health therapy, podiatry and nursing and the sciences (food, coastal and marine, exercise and sports).

In 2021, the Central Coast Clinical School welcomed its first students and expanded its presence into Gosford.

Sydney (City)

The Sydney campus offers world-class facilities and a range of ELICOS English Language programs and postgraduate programs, including Information Technology, Business Administration and Professional Accounting.

Singapore (Downtown Core)

Located in the CBD of one of Asia's best entrepreneurial and educational hubs, the Singapore campus offers programs in business, commerce, communications, construction management, engineering, environmental and occupational health and safety and information technology.

Research

The university is a leading contributor to research both in the world and in Australia. Its researchers benefit from its world-class facilities and flagship research institutes consisting of the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER), and more than 15 Priority Research Centres.

Anyone with worries about the cost of studying in Australia can be reassured that the University of Newcastle is located in a place with a significantly lower cost of living than most major cities in the country. Additionally, there are a huge variety of financial support options and scholarship opportunities for international students.

The University is excited to announce four new international student scholarships from 2022 valued up to AUD 60,000 depending on the length of study and the degree of choice:

There are more scholarships available at the University of Newcastle, several of which can be received by international students. Some examples include:

The South Asia Excellence Scholarship is a merit-based award, valued at AUD 10,000 per year of study. Eligibility is considered automatically upon enrolment, and awards are granted to students with strong academic achievements and motivation.

The ASEAN Excellence Scholarship is a merit-based award, targeted at students with exceptional academic performance.

The scholarship is valued at AUD 10,000 per year of full-time study, and scholarships will be automatically awarded to students who have received an offer to study in an eligible, non-quota program.

This scholarship aims to attract high-performing students and is valued at up to AUD 40,000 depending on course duration. There is no need to apply since all students are considered upon application.

This scholarship is designed for eligible international students who are progressing to undergraduate or postgraduate study at the university, after successfully completing a pathway program at the College of International Education.
