Christchurch, also known by its Māori name Ōtautahi, is an energised city filled with entrepreneurial spirit. Located on the South Island's eastern coast, it is the second largest city in New Zealand, and the country's most affordable major city.

Christchurch has been ranked the second-best student city in New Zealand (QS Best Student Cities, 2024). Ethnically diverse and full of vibrant entertainment options, it boasts a thriving, modern economy. There are plenty of opportunities for students to enjoy excellent food and exciting activities, or simply explore the beautiful scenery.

Christchurch has an excellent public transport system and is well-connected to the rest of New Zealand, and beyond. Direct flights from its international airport connect students easily to Asia, the Middle East, Australia and the USA.

After completing a Foundation Studies Certificate or a University Transfer Programme, UCIC graduates can smoothly progress into a wide range of degree programmes at the University of Canterbury, including the Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Engineering. The University of Canterbury is a five-star institution (QS Stars, 2024) with global reach.

Small classes led by experienced teaching staff mean that students receive extensive academic support while developing critical study skills. UCIC has been judged to meet the highest possible academic quality standards, as assessed by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. It is also a signatory of New Zealand's Pastoral Care Code of Practice.

UCIC is located on the University of Canterbury's beautiful Ilam campus, in Christchurch's leafy suburbs and in close proximity to both ocean and mountains. The campus is the largest in New Zealand, and offers a safe, inspiring learning environment, where students have access to the university's world-class facilities and services.

While at UCIC, students can participate in a huge range of social events and activities and can join more than 180 student-led clubs at the university.

All of UCIC's four study programmes are delivered on campus at the University of Canterbury, easing the transition into university life in a new country, and providing students with access to the university's state-of-the-art facilities.

UCIC offers students the choice of a foundation studies certificate, and three university transfer programmes (UTPs).

Foundation Studies Certificate

This eight-month programme is designed to bridge the gap between high school and university entrance. Delivered in a nurturing and supportive environment, students study eight courses to prepare them for their chosen degree at the University of Canterbury.

University Transfer Programmes

UCIC's unique UTPs allow students to transition from high school and complete a bachelor's degree in the same amount of time as students who are admitted directly onto an undergraduate degree at the University of Canterbury.

UTPs are designed to give students extra academic and language support in their first year of study. Students study the equivalent of eight academic courses (120 credits) over 12 months, before transitioning directly into their second year at the university.

UCIC's three university transfer programmes are:

• UTP Commerce: This one-year programme provides a number of core courses alongside a range of electives to ensure that graduates can choose from a broad range of the majors on offer at the University of Canterbury.
• UTP Engineering: Upon completion of this one-year programme, graduates can gain entrance into any of the second-year specialisations offered by the College of Engineering at the University of Canterbury, an internationally accredited institution.
• UTP Science: This one-year programme specialises in the fast-growing disciplines of computer science, mathematics, and data science, creating graduates who are experts in problem-solving, teamwork and communication.

To enrol on a course at UCIC, international students must meet both academic and English language entry requirements.

Academic requirements

Academic requirements at UCIC vary depending on where students complete their prior learning, and on the chosen programme of study.

General academic requirements for UCIC's top courses are listed below. Students can check the specific academic entry requirements for their existing qualifications, plus any additional requirements for their chosen course.

• Foundation Studies Certificate: Completion of Year One of the International Baccalaureate / IGCSE passing grade in four subjects
• UTP Commerce: At least 20 points over six International Baccalaureate units / Passes in two A-Level or AS-Level academic programmes
• UTP Engineering: At least 22 points over six International Baccalaureate units / Passes in three A-Level or AS-Level academic programmes (Maths with Calculus, Physics and/or Chemistry)
• UTP Science*: At least 20 points over six International Baccalaureate units / Passes in two A-Level or AS-Level academic programmes

*UTP Science students who wish to study maths, physics or chemistry will need to achieve higher grades in these subjects at high school level.

English language

The English language requirement is the same for all programmes at UCIC.

Students must have attained a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 5.5, with no band score below 5.0, or an equivalent qualification.

A range of English language qualifications are accepted.

Fees and expenses

The total tuition fees for study programmes at UCIC in 2024 are as follows:

• Foundation Studies Certificate: NZD 24,925
• UTP Commerce: NZD 32,150
• UTP Engineering: NZD 39,800
• UTP Science: NZD 36,750

Additional fees include an annual student services levy of NZD 1,100, and annual medical and travel insurance costing NZD 810.

Students must also ensure they have enough money to cover their living costs in Christchurch, which are typically in the range of:

• University-owned hall of residence: NZD 500 per week
• Homestay accommodation: NZD 400 per week
• Private student rental accommodation: NZD 350 per week

Scholarships and awards

To help offset the costs of study, all academically eligible students starting at UCIC are offered a Global Student Award of NZD 4,000.

A selection of competitive and/or needs-based scholarships and bursaries are available to eligible UCIC students. Upon completion of their UCIC study, students may also be eligible to receive further scholarships once they transfer to the University of Canterbury.

UCIC believes that education extends beyond the lecture theatre. Students become part of a diverse and supportive community of classmates, where all passions and ambitions are encouraged.

In the event that any student needs additional guidance or support, they can call upon UCIC's established support network, designed to ensure every learner is positioned for success. Support services available to students include:

Accommodation

Students at UCIC can make use of several options when it comes to accommodation on or close to campus.

Many students over the age of 18 choose to live in apartment-style facilities at halls of residence owned by the University of Canterbury. Residents benefit from a set-fee structure and enjoy single rooms with shared kitchens, bathrooms and communal areas, with Wi-Fi throughout. Apartments are typically shared by two to four students.

Students may also choose to live in a nearby homestay or a private rental. UCIC may be able to provide assistance in sourcing reputable accommodation close to the university.

Student clubs and societies

Students at UCIC enjoy access to a variety of clubs and societies which provide opportunities to connect with fellow students, explore interests and make the most out of the university experience. With over 180 student-run clubs and societies to choose from, there's something for everyone.
