Overview

Ulster University is the biggest university in Northern Ireland, and is located across four distinct campuses in the towns and cities of Belfast, Coleraine, Magee and Jordanstown. The university also maintains two other study sites in the cities of London and Birmingham - together these academic communities provide students with an impressive array of courses to choose from, in addition to distance and online learning.

Ulster University has a strong reputation for student satisfaction and academic excellence, as evidenced by its place among one of five shortlisted universities for The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide: ''University of the Year''. It has also risen into the highest 30 institutions across the UK for both student experience and teaching quality. Overall the university has recently risen further to achieve a place in the top 50 UK institutions overall.

Graduates from Ulster enjoy one of the best employment rates in the United Kingdom, as 94 per cent of graduates find work or further study six months following their departure from the university. Most of the study programmes are professionally accredited and allow students to obtain real world experience through placements and internships. With an award winning Career Development Centre behind them, students feel confident in achieving success.

What's new

Ulster University recognises that while life is returning to something more familiar for everyone, that living and studying on campus could still be an anxious experience for some in the university's community. The university has taken a variety of steps to ensure that the learning and working environment is a safe space for all in which everyone feels welcome and at ease. This includes initiatives like asymptomatic testing and supporting access to vaccinations for all students and staff. The university is committed to remaining in line with the latest government regulations and public health guidelines as they develop.

Ulster University has a new GBP 250 million campus in Belfast city centre, one of the largest higher education builds in Europe. Facilities at this campus will provide a progressive learning, teaching and research environment with the best technology. The vibrant campus, popular for art, hosts frequent fashion shows and art exhibitions making it an exciting place to study and work. The university also offers brand new, high-quality accommodation in the city centre beside the new campus.

The university is currently overseeing a number of new and exciting developments across a number of its campus, including the imminent completion and opening of its new Belfast campus. This is in addition to a variety of developments across Coleraine, Magee and Jordanstown. Together these changes are leading to the growth of a new chapter for Ulster University, in which students are placed at the front and centre to contribute to the design and implantation of a range of exciting student initiatives and programmes to support them through these changes.

Department structure

Department structure

Ulster University offers a variety of courses through its four faculties:

Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences

A research-intensive faculty, consisting of world leading researchers, delivers courses and research in a wide variety of arts and humanities disciplines. The faculty places strong emphasis on professional accreditation, work-based learning and employability.

The faculty is noted for the following:

  • 1st in the UK for impact of research in Law (REF 2014)
  • 3rd in the UK for Art & Design Research (REF 2014)

Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment

Comprising of four schools, the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment offers industry-informed, professionally recognised courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The faculty is known for its strong industry partnerships in both research and teaching, bringing excellent employment opportunities for its graduates. Most courses have a placement year, and graduates gain an additional diploma that helps them find professional placements.

Life and Health Sciences

The faculty is a leading provider of health-related education, with nearly 6,500 students and offers a wide range of accredited degree and research programmes covering seven disciplines.

Notable accomplishments of the faculty include the following:

  • Ranked as the top UK University for studying Pharmacy for the third year (Guardian University Guide 2017)
  • Ranked 1st in UK for Optometry, Ophthalmology & Orthoptics (Complete University Guide, 2020)

Business School

Ulster University Business School (UUBS) is a department which delivers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral courses to students across Northern Ireland in addition to students studying in London or Birmingham. Entry requirements

Entry requirements

For applicants whose first language is not English, evidence must be provided that demonstrates that they meet a suitable standard of English Language competency for the course they are applying to. Each applicant will need to complete and submit a completed English language proficiency test, dated within two years of the proposed start date of their studies.

In order to secure a place on most courses at Ulster, the following is required:

  • A minimum IELTS test score 6.0 (with no single contributing band scoring under 5.5)
  • If the English language proficiency of the applicant does not satisfy minimum requirements, the university's Centre for English Language Teaching provides a variety of English language courses, all designed to equip international learners with the required language skills for academic study at Ulster.
  • The university also supports its own English language test which is available for applicants which need to demonstrate their English language abilities for an application. To book, students can email and quote their Student ID

Students at Ulster University are able to directly apply for free via the internet or through UCAS. If students are applying directly to the university, they will usually receive a course offer within 48 hours.

Postgraduate students are also able to apply directly online. Within this online application, postgraduate applicants will need to upload key documents such as university-level study transcripts and a personal statement outlining their reasons for applying. There is no application fee associated with this. There may be other course specific entry requirements to consider.

Ulster University has four campuses with a variety of accommodation options, sport and fitness facilities and dining choices.

Accommodation

The Student Roost in Belfast city centre is a new, high quality, modern development with a range of communal facilities in a safe and secure environment.

The Dalriada Village and The Courtyard offer apartments with modern facilities at the Jordanstown campus. They have en-suite rooms and spacious places for students to relax.

Five accommodation choices at the Coleraine campus offer a variety of housing options on and near the campus.

The Magee campus has the Coppin House accommodation choice nearby and very affordable rooms at Duncreggan Village.

Accommodation at Ulster is guaranteed for International students. Take a 360 degree tour of university's student accommodation across all campuses.

Sport facilities

Ulster's campuses offer state-of-the-art fitness studios, new sports centres, multi-sport indoor and outdoor facilities and trained sports staff.

Libraries

Each campus offers modern learning spaces providing integrated library services and resources, comfortable study spaces and student computing with generous opening hours.

All campuses offer teaching spaces, learning centres, computer suites and access to restaurants, cafes, banks and coffee shops.

University Funded Scholarships

  • A scholarship of GBP 2,000 is awarded to all international undergraduate and postgraduate students. This is designed by Ulster to support students in their studies.
  • Ulster also provides an extensive range of accommodation and regional scholarships each year.

Undergraduate scholarships

The Barnett Pharmaceutical Sciences Scholarship

The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences offers the Barnett Pharmaceutical Sciences Scholarship for students with a confirmed conditional offer to the MSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences programme. The scholarship will be used to cover the full amount of the scholars' tuition fees with any remaining funds being paid directly to the scholar in support of living expenses.

Postgraduate scholarships

International postgraduate scholarships are awarded to qualifying students paying full fees.

Bursaries are available for students who qualify.
