The university's new Global Pre-Arrival Support team assists students with study permit applications, navigating the immigration process, and preparing to arrive in Canada. This support continues upon arrival with an engaging orientation program designed specifically for international students.

Student Housing Guarantee

U of G is proud to offer a first-year residence guarantee to all international undergraduate students. Our on-campus communities are all a 5-minute walk to the heart of campus and include traditional, apartment, and townhouse-style residences. Sustainability

Teaching quality

At the University of Guelph, undergraduate students have the choice of 16 degree programs, including the opportunity to major in over 75 subjects. With the ability to double major or add a minor, there are thousands of ways to build a degree that aligns with a student's specific interests. In addition, the university offers more than 100 graduate programs in a variety of disciplines.

Subjects offered include engineering, life sciences, arts and humanities, social sciences, business, and agricultural or veterinary sciences. The university takes a research-intensive approach to learning, for which it has gained national acclaim.

Known as Canada's ‘food university', the University of Guelph is ranked as the top university for food science and technology in the country (US News & World Report, 2023). On a global scale, U of G ranks in 24th place for its agricultural science programs (QS World University Rankings, 2023) and within the top 150 universities for life sciences (Times Higher Education, 2023).

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

The University of Guelph accepts international undergraduate applications for September intake, with additional opportunities available to start in January based on program. Admission requirements depend on various factors including curriculum and program-specific requirements. Review the complete list of U of G admission requirements by country or system of education on the university's website.

Students can apply to U of G online and are encouraged to familiarize themselves with important dates and deadlines.

English language

U of G requires proof of English proficiency if a student's primary or first language is not English, and they have had less than four years of full-time secondary school or post-secondary study, demonstrating satisfactory academic progress, in an English-language school system. Acceptable tests and scores can be found on the university's website.

For students who do not meet the language requirements, U of G offers a selection of English language programs and pathways into study. Enrolling on one of these programs enables students to improve their English skills, either in advance of commencing their study program or alongside their course, depending on their chosen pathway.

Immigration

International students must obtain the correct immigration documents before they commence their study program to enable them to live and study in Canada for the duration of their course. U of G's global pre-arrival support team is available to support this process.

U of G's employment rate after graduation exceeds the provincial average, with 92 percent of graduates securing work within six months of graduation and 87 percent gaining employment in an area related to their degree.

When it comes to the University's increasingly popular agriculture and food programs, U of G graduates are in especially high demand with 4 jobs available for each graduate in this area.

Research shows that a typical starting salary for U of G graduates is in the region of $47,142 CAD. U of G's grads work at leading global brands including Google, PwC, KPMG, Amazon, Microsoft, TD Bank, and more.

Careers guidance

The University of Guelph's Experiential Learning Hub provides careers support and guidance to all students through a range of resources, including:

Graduate students

In addition to the above, graduate students have access to many further resources to assist them in finding relevant professional work after graduation. This includes the Aurora E-Learning platform which provides a steady flow of up to date career advice, specifically tailored to graduate students and postdocs.

Staying in Canada

International students must apply for a post-graduation work permit to legally live and work in Canada after they graduate with eligibility for a post-graduate work permit.

Facilities

Students at the University of Guelph enjoy a picturesque campus with a blend of ultra-modern infrastructure and quaint historic buildings. With spacious lecture theatres, hi-tech research laboratories, ample green spaces and a great selection of eateries, students have access to everything they need.

Science Complex

The Guelph campus is home to the Summerlee Science Complex, North America's largest science-based integrated teaching and research facility, through which students have access to state-of-the-art learning resources, research labs and study spaces.

Thornbrough Building

The home of Engineering at the University of Guelph, Thornbrough Building is comprised of labs, classrooms and study spaces allowing students to work collaboratively on research and design projects.

MacDonald Hall

MacDonald Hall is the home of the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics at the University of Guelph. From classrooms and group study areas to the Business Career Development Centre and the John F. Wood Centre for Business and Student Enterprise, the newly renovated building provides business students and faculty the environment and support needed to succeed in sustainable business practice and research.

Athletics Centre

After a multimillion-dollar renovation, U of G's athletics centre now offers a modern, spacious environment for athletic performance and daily recreation. Home to the well-loved Guelph Gryphon mascot, students can participate in athletic clubs, fitness classes, and one of the largest intramural sport leagues in Canada.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

Undergraduate

The University of Guelph offers a number of scholarships for international undergraduate students, ranging in value from CAD 1,000 to CAD 42,500. Students are automatically considered for international entrance scholarships, ranging from CAD 18,500 to CAD 21,500. Once students have completed their first year of study, they may be eligible for in-course scholarships to reward outstanding achievement.

Some scholarships do not require an application, while others have strict deadlines. Students are advised to carefully read the application requirements before applying for scholarships.

Graduate

Graduate students have a number of options available to them when it comes to financial aid at U of G, including awards, scholarships and assistantships.

Scholarships may be obtained through U of G or through external organizations.

Bursaries

In the case of existing students experiencing unforeseen financial hardship or an emergency, U of G may provide bursaries to assist with study or living costs.

Earning money

Students may work part-time and earn money to fund their living expenses while completing their degree. On campus alone, U of G employs over 4,000 part-time students in various roles.

Co-operative education programs and work study programs offer students the opportunity to earn money while completing their studies.
