Overview

The University of Surrey is ideal for international students looking for a university steeped in inspiring educational history. With roots going back to the late 19th century, today it is home to more than 16,000 students, with 36 per cent of the population coming from overseas.

Through its students and staff, Surrey achieves great things. In 2020, it ranked 23rd in the Complete University Guide, 26th in the Guardian University Guide, and 32nd in the Times and the Sunday Times Good University Guide. It also placed 7th in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey in 2018.

As well as high-quality teaching, the university provides access to plenty of academic support services and resources. International students can receive help with their language skills, and there are many services in place to help them easily settle into university life.

There's also a wealth of career support available. Students from all subject areas can benefit from business support and entrepreneurial guidance. Everyone can explore different ideas, develop desirable business skills and enhance their graduate prospects.

Just 34 minutes away from London by train, international students can enjoy the beautiful, friendly campus and area of Surrey. Guildford is a bustling and welcoming town and is surrounded by scenic countryside.

The University of Surrey is extremely proud to have been voted The University of the Year for Graduate Employment in The Times and Sunday Times Complete University Guide 2022. This esteemed ranking recognises the university's high calibre of graduates and their excellent employability prospects. This ranking is awarded based on Graduate Outcomes data collated by the Higher Education Standards Agency (HESA).

Surrey was also ranked 1st in the UK and 12th in the world for its student work placements and employer research programmes (QS World Employability Rankings 2020). The university's former students are consistently employed in high-skilled jobs upon graduation thanks to its strong focus on work and practice-based learning within its core course structure.

Students are actively encouraged in managing and working towards their career expectations, be that as entrepreneurs or through placements and networking within the business community.

It is ranked 32nd in the 2022 Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide, 35th in the UK (Complete University Guide 2022), 57th in The Guardian University Guide 2022. It ranks consistently highly in veterinary science, nursing, sociology and modern languages across the board.

Furthermore, the university stands out for its research excellence. Surrey is placed at 272nd in the QS World University Rankings 2022, 246 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022 and 388th in the Academic Ranking of World Universities research league tables.

Department structure

Department structure

At the University of Surrey, students can choose to study:

  • Undergraduate degrees
  • Postgraduate taught degrees
  • Postgraduate research degrees
  • Continuing professional development and short courses
  • Degree courses with a foundation year
  • International pathway programmes

Programmes and courses are taught from three academic faculties where there are 22 schools and departments.

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

Covering a variety of areas, students can grow in a learning community that focuses on the arts, humanities and social sciences. Departments include the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, the School of Law, the School of Economics, Guildford School of Acting and Surrey Business School.

Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences

The faculty combines the core engineering disciplines as well as specific areas of chemistry, mathematics, computing and physics. Departments include: Computer Science, Chemical and Process Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering Sciences.

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences

There are four schools that offer courses in human and animal health. These are the School of Biosciences and Medicine, School of Health Sciences, School of Psychology and School of Veterinary Medicine.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

International students need to meet a number of requirements for admission to the University of Surrey.

Academic requirements

Prospective international undergraduate and postgraduate students will need grades that are accepted equivalents to UK qualifications. This depends on the student's chosen course and country of origin. Some courses may also have additional academic requirements. For example, there is an audition process for performing arts courses.

English language requirements

A high level of English language proficiency is necessary for admission to Surrey. Specific requirements can be found on undergraduate and postgraduate listing pages where students can select their chosen course. The university accepts a range of English language qualifications.

The university also offers intensive pre-sessional English courses that aim to prepare international students for degree programmes, develop their English language proficiency and facilitate acceptance onto degrees where a certain level of English language ability is a pre-condition.

Visas

International students need a student visa before they can study at the University of Surrey. To receive a student visa, students must be offered a place on a course, be from outside the European Economic Areas or Switzerland, have a sufficient level of English language proficiency and be able to support themselves financially during the course.

International students are strongly encouraged to check all of the entry requirements prior to application.

Facilities

Building investments

The University of Surrey invests a lot into student learning and other campus facilities. In recent years, there has been a GBP 400 million building development and improvement programme. This enhanced student accommodation, Surrey Sports Park, the Library and Learning Centre and the Ivy Arts Centre. Additional investments have also benefited the School of Veterinary Medicine and the 5G Innovation Centre.

Campus

Surrey is based on a beautiful campus where students can find everything they need to support them academically, personally or socially. There are quiet study areas, food markets, top sports facilities and much more all within the campus area. There's even a laundrette, post office, bank, bookshop and Unitemps, which support students in getting industry-related work experience and paid work while studying.

Centre for Wellbeing

To ensure everyone has a pleasant experience at Surrey, the Centre for Wellbeing provides many supportive health and wellbeing services. This includes mental health support, general advice, workshops, counselling, events, and guidance for managing stress.

Accommodation

International students have a range of accommodation choices on offer at Surrey, to suit all budgets and requirements. Students are guaranteed university accommodation in their first year as long as application deadlines are met. The university's accommodation was included in the Student Crowd Best Student Accommodation Awards in 2018.

There are over 6,000 study-bedrooms, and at least 50 per cent of these have en-suite shower and toilet facilities. Residences are looked after by helpful staff and all first-year students are assigned a Student Life Mentor who can help provide support. The security team is also on-hand all day and night.

Graduate outcomes

Graduate outcomes

The annual Graduate Outcomes Survey, published by the UK's Higher Education Standards Agency (HESA), ranks the University of Surrey's graduates 12th in the country (against other higher education institutions), with 96 per cent finding work or going on to further study after graduating (UK domiciled, undergraduate full-time students).

Professional Training Placements

The university has provided Professional Training Placements since it pioneered the idea 60 years ago. Almost all undergraduates are able to undertake placement opportunities, which immensely boosts their graduate prospects.

Students develop their personal, academic and professional skills over the course of the one-year placement. In addition, they are able to draw on the support of peers, through peer-to-peer coaching, and a PTY tutor.

In the last five years, over 2,300 partner organisations have worked with students through industry placements in the UK and overseas. This includes well-known companies like Oracle, the Walt Disney Company and Morgan Stanley.

Career support

Surrey's career services support students in deciding what career route is best for them, and helps them take the steps needed to get there. There is CV, application and interview support careers fairs and workshops and a whole wealth of resources, including the digital career hub, Surrey Pathfinder.

Global Graduate Awards

Students have the opportunity to take advantage of the Global Graduate Awards, which are a number of free extracurricular courses offered by the university.

Facilitated by experts from across the university and industry, the courses, taught across 11 different languages, allow students to explore different areas and subjects. This enhances their holistic development, allowing them to stand out in the job market. Places are offered on a first-come, first-served basis in the interests of sustainability.
