Overview

Wilfrid Laurier International College offers both a foundation and the UTP Stage II program which is the equivalent of the 1st year bachelor's degree. After successful completion of it, students progress directly into the 2nd year of their bachelor's degree at Laurier. WLIC is offering transition to more than 70 programs of five faculties: Business and Economics, Human and Social Sciences, Liberal Arts, Science and Arts.

With smaller class sizes, more support for international students, more approachable admission requirements and options for students without Math grade 12, WLIC is a perfect solution for many students.

Laurier is one of Canada's oldest universities. It ranks in the top 6 percent of institutions worldwide, has a 97 percent graduate employment/placement rate and is located in Canada's tech capital.

With intakes in September, January and May, students have flexible entry points and can even start online with a Hyflex option before arriving.

A new initiative, WLIC is offering an automatic CAD 4,000 scholarship for May and September 2024 intakes. There are no academic requirements and no interview needed – students must simply accept their offer before the deadline. All students who apply before this date are also guaranteed a place in students residence accommodation.

Teaching quality

WLIC classes are taught by Laurier professors, meaning that students are learning the same material as their Laurier peers, from faculty who are passionate about their subject, and can share a wealth of experience and knowledge. It also makes the transition onto a bachelor's degree upon completion of the UTP programs even more seamless for the student.

The quality of teaching at Wilfrid Laurier University is one of the top reasons that students opt to study here. Department structure

Department structure

There are five faculties that make up Wilfrid Laurier University, each offering a range of study options. In total, there are 70 programs that students can progress onto upon successful completion of their foundation and UTP Stage 2 qualification.

Of these, the most in-demand programs are computer science, business technology management, data science, biology, neuroscience, biochemistry & biotechnology, psychology, film studies, and communication studies.

The five faculties that make up the university, and their programs, are:

  • Science – including data sciences, computer science, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics and others, along with broader science degrees
  • Business & Economics – including business technology management, economics, accounting and financial management
  • Arts – including a range of programs such as ancient studies, geography, languages, political science, religion and culture, sociology and more
  • Liberal Arts – offering English, history, human rights, user experience design and others
  • Human and Social Sciences – including health studies, criminology, health management, psychology, and game design & development

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

The entry requirements for study at Wilfrid Laurier International College vary depending on students' native country, whether they are applying for the UTP1 Foundation program or one of the UTP Stage 2 programs.

For UTP1, students must have an International Baccalaureate qualification of at least 18 points, or at least three D grades if studying at A Level. Equivalent qualifications from other countries are also acceptable, with a full list to view on the college's website.

At UTP Stage 2 Level, the requirements vary slightly depending on whether students are applying for an arts, liberal arts, or human & social sciences qualification, or a business and economics or science qualification.

Generally, students will need to have an equivalent to 22 IB points, or successful completion of Grade 12 in Canada with a 65 percent average in four subjects. For studies in business and economics or science, a mathematics qualification will be required. Students without math, can still apply. They will be asked to take math as an additional subject during their program.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

All students who attend Wilfrid Laurier International College must pay program fees, which start at CAD 26,142 for the foundation program for the academic year 2024/25, which is made up of 8 separate courses. Additional support fees might also apply, and there are other compulsory fees that students need to be aware of, including student services fees and medical insurance fees which must be paid each term. UTP II fees start at CAD 32,303.

Students are also advised to budget CAD 70 to CAD 150 per course to pay for books and other essential supplies.

An automatic scholarship is now being offered to all students for May and September 2024 intakes. The scholarship is worth CAD 4,000, and there are no academic requirements involved, nor do students need to interview for it. As long as students apply and then accept an offer before the deadline, they are eligible.

There are other scholarships available for current students too, which celebrate academic, social and community success.

Facilities

Facilities

All WLIC students have the option of staying in guaranteed residence accommodation in the apartment-style student dorms located only 3-5 minutes' walk from the campus. This accommodation offers a comfortable and safe space with all essential amenities.

Every campus building offers a modern study learning area, furnished with the necessary resources to give students everything they need to succeed. Classes are equipped with the latest Hyflex technology allowing students to study online if their visa is delayed and they need to start studying from their home country.

WLIC students also have access to a city public library which is based across the road from the main campus. There is also a 2-level gym, swimming pool, basketball and football courts on campus, offering ample opportunities for students to keep fit and enjoy a healthy and balanced student lifestyle. Prospective students can watch a campus video to get a feel of the campus size and amenities offered.

Graduate outcomes

Graduate outcomes

Laurier's employment rate for international students is 94.5 percent compared to average rate of 85 percent in Canada. Most programs offer paid coops, so students have amazing exposure to their industry fields and have opportunity to get work experience during their degree. Also, WLU's job fairs are the largest in Canada and happen on campus twice a year.

All courses at Laurier are designed to prepare students for their careers, with the understanding that workplaces and industries are constantly changing, adapting and being refined. Students will be taught not just the core academic content, but how to be adaptable to change, resilience, and other skills to make them a valuable future employee. All aspects of the experience at Laurier are therefore tailored to employability.

Being located in Canada's tech capital and only an hour from Toronto, there is an abundance of opportunities to pursue employment in students' field of study, perfect for finding work quickly and locally upon graduation.
