Australian Institute of Language (AIL) is an innovative English Language school based in the heart of Melbourne's central business district. The school offers a concise selection of nationally recognised qualifications with a mission to produce graduates with the best communication skills. Students at AIL emerge as diligent and efficient graduates with a strong code of ethics.

Qualifications are delivered at Diploma and Advanced Diploma levels, and all courses are designed in keeping with industry-endorsed competency standards. Subject areas offered are Interpreting, Translating, Leadership and Management.

  • Diploma of Interpreting – students develop advanced language interpreting skills in dialogues and monologues, with an emphasis on retention and recall.
  • Advanced Diploma of Translating – students hone translation skills and learn how to effectively research and translate complex concepts.
  • Diploma of Leadership and Management – international students seeking to apply their abilities and knowledge in competitive industry roles will strengthen enterprise skills such as management, organisation, and communication.
  • Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management – students learn how to apply specialist knowledge with leadership and management skills in a wide variety of contexts where they are accountable for team results.

The school holds accreditation as an official IELTs test centre, as well as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO: 41424), and delivers programs from Australia's National Interpreting and Translating Packages which ensures a high standard of vocational training.

An AIL education is designed to both improve professional performance, and expand each student's ability to express their personality, making them highly desirable to prospective employers and improving long term career potential.

What's new

Remote learning

Australian Institute of Language currently offers online courses, prioritising student safety. Its training and assessment will also be remote.

Students can make virtual appointments with the AIL specialist course adviser, as required.

Online student system

AIL provides students with a mobile-friendly study portal that allows them to access and manage their learning resources and assessments online at their convenience. Its content displays on all devices, including Macs, tablets, PCs and smartphones (with iOS, Windows, and Android).

Students can schedule their online course content in learning modules and easily track their study progress with valuable insights. They can record lectures, watch tutorials, enjoy access to software simulations, and more in order to help them complete their program successfully.

Teaching quality

Teaching quality

Australian Institute of Language offers every enrolled student a quality education with the training and support needed to help them to successfully complete the program.

The AIL teaching quality team works collaboratively with course teaching teams, individuals, and schools it engages with students through blended and online delivery models.

Program information is clear and accessible, and students can also make use of peer-based learning. All of the units are in line with current industry standards and are highly relevant.

Teachers are well qualified and offer students constructive feedback on a regular basis. All teaching staff is currently working remotely. Students also enjoy access to free learner tutorials, tools and other resources to help them to successfully complete their program. Students can also avail of administrative support should they need it.

The AIL facilities staff also offer support twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

The study options students can choose from at AIL are:

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

English language requirements

All international students must demonstrate English language competency through one of the following ways:

  • An IELTS overall score of 5.5 or equivalent
  • English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS)
  • A recognised, completed diploma or equivalent (or above) delivered in English in any discipline.
  • International students applying to the Diploma of Interpreting must have an IELTS overall score of 6.0 (no lower than 6.0 in listening & speaking) to commence their study at AIL.
  • International students applying to the Advanced Diploma of Translating must have an IELTS overall score of 6.0 (no lower than 6.0 in reading and writing) to commence their study at AIL.

Age requirements

International students must be aged 18 or over to enrol in courses offered by AIL.

Pre-enrolment interview

A pre-enrolment interview will ensure that all participants are enrolled in an appropriate training program and identify any special needs with their individual learning requirements. Participants who do require assistance or support with any special need, including LLN, can speak confidentially with their trainer and assessor. AIL is proud to offer assistance to all its students to gain competence.

Language, literacy and numeracy (LLN)

All applicants must demonstrate adequate competency in language, literacy and numeracy as part of the enrolment process. A LLN test may be conducted if AIL identifies a need to evaluate a student's LLN prior to enrolment. Additional LOTE (Language other than English) tests may also be required for those applicants wishing to enrol in the interpreting and/or translation courses.

Student Support

Australian Institute of Language provides support to its students to ensure they have an enriching study experience:

  • Students can avail personal support from the AIL compliance manager or the CEO for personal/career advice and counsel
  • If required students can opt for deferment of study, further student support service or go for a special consideration application
  • Students have access to support services such as practical advice on assignments, course-specific language and learning skills, and more
  • Australian Institute of Language can arrange for assistance for students with a disability
  • Australian Institute of Language ensures its students have the required training facilities, equipment and other resources needed for successful completion of their studies.

Student safety

At AIL, student safety is a top priority and the institute is committed to:

  • A health and safety management system that eliminates the risk of injury or illness
  • Creating an engaging and safe learning environment
  • Health and safety training of its staff
  • Passing health and safety instruction to students during orientation
  • Reporting of injuries and incidents, and taking measures to minimise their recurrence
  • Complying with health and safety legislation and requirements.
