Northumbria University has recently undergone huge investment to create new, state-of-the-art facilities to supplement its award-winning 24-hour library, Student's Union and sports centres. A research-led education at Northumbria takes a deep interest in solving real-world challenges in a fast-paced world. It has an international reputation with major partner organisations such as Nissan, IBM and Nike, as well as over 500 global education institutions to provide full value for students' studies. The university ranked 7th in the UK for the overall number of graduates in professional employment, with its dedicated careers assisting students and resulting in 95% of graduates working within six months.

What's new

Northumbria University has invested more than GBP 250 million in its campus facilities over the past decade. Most recently, this has included a GBP 52 million investment in two new state-of-the-art facilities to provide major benefits for Computing and Information Sciences as well as Architecture and Built Environment students.

Computing and Information Sciences Building

Supporting one of the university's strongest research areas, Northumbria has spent over GBP 7 million on the new Computing and Information Sciences Building. The facility consists of multiple research spaces and specialist teaching areas, as well as a ‘Maker Space' to encourage students to collaborate, test and work on new ideas. 58% of outputs in the department are considered world-leading or internationally excellent, and the investment has only enhanced the facilities and opportunities available to students.

Architecture and Built Environment Facility

With a renowned architecture school and an international reputation for excellence, the department now has access to state-of-the-art studios designed by award-winning architects. The world-class home is an extension of the university's Grade II listed Sutherland Building and gives the school a world-class home to enhance the student experience.

Students attending Northumbria are attending an institution with both a national and international reputation for academic quality. The Law Department has been awarded the highest form of national recognition in the UK, the Queen's Anniversary prize (2013), whilst the Arts department received funding for a Centre for Doctoral Training over the next five years, one of only 18 institutions in Britain to be awarded such funding. The Business School has also received double accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) for its business and accounting programmes, the first in Europe to achieve this feat.

Northumbria School of Design

Covers Industrial, Fashion, Communication and Innovation Design. Boasts impressive alumni including the Chief Design Officer at Apple, Sir Jonathan Ive, who helped design the iPad, iPhone and iMac.

Nursing, Midwifery & Health

Well-established, with BSc Nursing programmes ranked in the top 20 in the UK (Complete University Guide) and accredited by the Royal College of Nursing. Hosts highly rated Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) and Health Professional Council (HPC) approved events.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Students applying to Northumbria University generally require an English language test to prove proficiency, such as IELTS, Pearson or other equivalents. Entry requirements for academic courses vary from one to another and therefore students should check individual course requirements.

Students failing to meet requirements can attend a range of pre-sessional English and Study Skills programmes provided by the university throughout the year, or a large Summer School, which provides a warm, friendly and supportive environment. They aim to prepare international students for study at Northumbria or elsewhere in the UK, whether undergraduate or postgraduate study. English and Study Skills programmes give students language and other academic skills necessary to benefit as much as possible from their future academic courses and involve a content-based approach. Participants will also develop the ideas and concepts they need to participate in the global academic community.

The quality of education provided and the level of students is paramount to Northumbria University, and as a result it welcomes gifted students from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures including the UK and Europe, the Middle East, Africa, South East and East Asia, Latin-America and the Indian subcontinent.

Facilities

Northumbria University provides students with access to outstanding facilities for both study, research and leisure. The huge levels of investment in recent years have created state-of-the-art facilities in a picturesque setting in Newcastle's vibrant city environment.

Students can access modern laboratories, workshops, CAD suites, media labs and modern classrooms with all the necessary IT facilities to support students with the tools they need to achieve the best education possible. Furthermore, a 24/7 library provides access to learning facilities at any time of the day, with the award-winning building holding the UK Customer Service Excellence (CSE) standard since 2010.

Away from the classroom, there is modern city centre accommodation with various choices for students, and a number of huge sports centres for every level of fitness. The sports facilities around campus include fitness centres, squash courts, a sprint track, swimming pool and a number of high-quality outdoor pitches. The main Sport Central arena can hold up to 3,000 spectators.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

A dedicated International Academic Scholarship scheme is in place at Northumbria to reward outstanding academic achievement. These scholarships are offered to international students joining full-time courses as a reduction in first year tuition fees.

International scholarships are now awarded based on domicile. Applicants are encouraged to use the scholarship search to check their eligibility.
