St. George's University

Founded as an independent School of Medicine in 1976, St. George’s University (SGU) opened its doors to students in January 1977. It has developed into a premier center of international education, attracting students and faculty from 140 countries to the Caribbean island of Grenada, in the West Indies.

Thanks to a distinctive partnership with Northumbria University, SGU offers students the opportunity to earn a Doctor of Medicine (MD) and study for up to two years in the United Kingdom. The International Medical Pathway partnership began in January 2007 and has welcomed more than 1,700 medical students to Newcastle.

Students commence their studies at Northumbria University in Newcastle upon Tyne and complete one, two, or three years of study, depending on their enrollment in either the four-year Doctor of Medicine, five, or six-year Medical Pathway. Subsequently, they complete one year of integrated basic sciences at St George’s University in Grenada at the True Blue campus, leading to clinical rotations in the USA and UK.

The SGU True Blue campus in Grenada provides all the amenities and state-of-the-art facilities of a world-class institution in a vibrant multicultural setting.

The SGU/NU Medical Degree Pathway is designed to cultivate knowledge, clinical skills, and research interests while offering the opportunity to experience various healthcare systems, preparing students to practice medicine across all specialties with a global perspective. The programs offered in Newcastle are equivalent to those delivered in Grenada but offer students the chance to study in and encounter a different healthcare environment.

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at SGU provides access to a medical career on an international scale, having received accreditation and/or approval from numerous external regulatory and accrediting bodies. The accreditation standards used to accredit the SGU medical degree program have been judged comparable to those employed by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the organization accrediting US and Canadian medical schools. SGU has contributed over 17,000 physicians to the global physician workforce, with MD alumni practicing in every state in the United States and in more than 50 countries worldwide.
