Overview

Through its academic and language programs, the University of Canberra College (UC College) enables students who have not met the University of Canberra's (UC) entry requirements to progress directly into degree-level study. Students receive substantial support, ensuring the transition into university life goes smoothly.

UC College offers the following package pathways:

  • International Foundation Studies: a pathway program for international students seeking entry into the first year of most undergraduate degrees at UC.
  • Diplomas: offering personalised academic support and guidance to students, diplomas provide up to one year of credit in a chosen undergraduate degree.
  • Graduate Certificate in Academic Foundations: a pathway course for international students who want to enrol on a master's degree, but do not meet the postgraduate coursework degree entry requirements.
  • English language programs: intensive language classes for students who do not meet the minimum English language requirements.

The University of Canberra has been ranked in 34th place globally in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings (2023). It is an institution with global reach, and almost a quarter of its 11,000 students are from overseas.

UC College is based on UC's main campus, and its students are treated the same as degree-level students, with access to the university's exemplary services and facilities. Furthermore, all international students are guaranteed accommodation through the university's residence providers.

Times Higher Education World University Rankings

In 2023, the University of Canberra ranked 34th globally in the THE Young University Rankings, demonstrating its excellence in teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. This score was the fifth highest of any Australian institution.

UC also ranks in the top 100 institutions worldwide on the THE Impact Rankings (2023), coming fourth globally for its efforts in reducing inequalities and in the top 50 for good health and well-being.

Good Universities Guide

In 2023, the University of Canberra ranked first in the Australian Capital Territory for full-time employment and teaching quality in Australia's Good Universities Guide.

Teaching quality

Teaching quality

UC College teachers are highly qualified and passionate about their subjects. Using their own experience and professional insights, they help learners develop their knowledge base and skillsets while providing dedicated support to each individual. Teachers at UC College are committed to helping every student reach their goal.

All students receive a personalised study experience. Academic classes have no more than 25 students, with English language classes never exceeding 18. Consequently, there's plenty of face-to-face teaching where students engage in collaborative learning. Teaching methods include lectures, practical sessions and tutorials.

Work-integrated learning

Almost 90 percent of UC's degrees have work-integrated learning embedded into them. This means students have many opportunities for practical experiences, where they can prepare for professional careers and gain key industry insights.

This is reflected in UC's graduate employment rate: over 90 percent of UC graduates find work within four months of leaving university (QILT, 2022).

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Academic entry requirements

Students looking to enroll on a course at UC College must meet the academic entry requirements. These vary between courses.

International students can check the country-specific entry requirements for their existing qualifications. They may also contact UC College directly.

English language requirements

Programs at UC College are taught in English. As a result, students need to have a good understanding of the language to make the most of their classes.

Students must demonstrate their language proficiency through the following IELTS test results, or an equivalent qualification:

  • International Foundation Studies – overall score of 5.5, with no band below 5.0
  • Diploma – overall score of 5.5, with no band below 5.5
  • Graduate Certificate in Academic Foundations – overall score of 6.0, with no band below 6.0

English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS)

The University of Canberra College English Language Centre offers intensive English language courses to help non-native English speakers improve their day-to-day English skills and academic abilities.

An ELICOS course prepares international students to meet the language requirements for study programs both at UC College and UC.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

New international students at UC College in 2024 may be eligible for a scholarship to assist with their tuition costs.

Welcome to UC College scholarship

Students who accept an offer from UC College to commence studying in trimester two, semester two, or trimester three of 2024, are eligible for the Welcome to UC College scholarship.

The value of this scholarship varies between courses:

  • International Foundations Studies – 10 percent off the tuition fee
  • Diploma Programs – 10 percent off the tuition fee
  • Graduate Certificate in Academic Foundations (GCAF) – AUD 2,000 off the tuition fee

This scholarship is not applicable to students enrolling on English language programs.

English Excellence scholarship

The English Excellence Scholarship is an award in the amount of AUD 500, and is given to international students commencing their studies in trimester two, semester two, or trimester three 2024.

This scholarship is awarded to students who have met the English requirement for their selected academic programs (including foundation programs, diploma programs and the GCAF) without packaging ELICOS programs.

ELICOS scholarship

International students who package an ELICOS course with another UC College or UC academic program can receive a 15 percent discount on the ELICOS weekly rate. This scholarship is available for all intakes in 2024.

Sponsored and diplomatic students are excluded.

Student safety

Canberra ranks in the top 30 student cities globally (QS Best Student Cities, 2024). The quality of life in the city is generally high, marked by its safe environment, excellent education system, and abundance of green spaces. Residents enjoy a balance of urban amenities and natural beauty, with cultural attractions and a strong job market further enhancing its appeal.

Australia in general is a very safe country to live in and is ranked 22nd in the world in the Global Peace Index (2024).

UC's campus provides a safe, welcoming environment for all students. It boasts many on-site clubs and societies as well as prayer rooms, women's rooms, cafes, and student residences.

Campus security

UC has a dedicated security team working 24/7 to ensure campus safety.

Services include:

  • Security escorts – mostly used in the evenings, students can travel around campus with a friendly member of the security team
  • Help points – these are located around campus and residences and can be used to contact the security team for assistance
  • CCTV and campus patrol – these monitor the campus 24/7

Graduate outcomes

Graduate outcomes

After the successful completion of their studies, UC College students typically have guaranteed entry onto a UC degree program. Students on a foundation studies course can enter directly into the first year of a bachelor's program while most students holding a UC diploma can transition straight into the second year of their undergraduate degree.

International students in Australia may be eligible to work in the country for a further two to four years after their studies through a post-study work visa. Canberra is an eligible location for an additional year of post-study work rights.

University of Canberra

Graduates from the University of Canberra gain invaluable industry experience through work-integrated learning, a key component of most of the university's degree programs. Through work placements and opportunities, students develop the workplace skills that top employers look for.

In the 2021 QILT Graduate Outcomes Survey, graduates showed that 95.1 percent of undergraduate students found long-term employment, with strong starting salaries. The survey also indicated that UC was number one in Australia for industry collaboration.
