THE World ranking

The University of Chicago is an urban research university that has driven new ways of thinking since 1890 and its commitment to free and open inquiry draws inspired scholars to it’s global campuses, where ideas are born that challenge and change the world. It empowers individuals to challenge conventional thinking in pursuit of original ideas. Students in the College develop critical, analytic, and writing skills in rigorous, interdisciplinary core curriculum.

UChicago is home to some of the most venerated academic programs in the world, having established the fields of ecology and sociology, the first graduate international affairs program in the United States, and the first executive MBA program. Students can explore current degree and academic programs across the undergraduate College, five graduate divisions, six professional schools, and the Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies.

The university’s research has led to such breakthroughs as discovering the link between cancer and genetics, establishing revolutionary theories of economics, and developing tools to produce reliably excellent urban schooling. It has generated new insights for the benefit of present and future generations with its national and affiliated laboratories: Argonne National Laboratory, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, and the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

As a center of intense intellectual inquiry, the University of Chicago Library shares with the University of Chicago the aspiration to be the most dynamic research and learning environment in the world, supporting the University’s commitment to research and teaching in the sciences, social sciences, humanities, and the College and to using its intellectual resources to help solve the world’s problems.

The University of Chicago is enriched by the city it calls home. In partnership with its neighbors, the university has invested in Chicago's mid-South Side across such areas as health, education, economic growth, and the arts. Together with its medical center, it is the largest private employer on the South Side.
