Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, USA, is a premier urban research institution founded in 1868. It is one of the 50-largest public universities in the United States, and with nearly 350 areas of study, its range of programs fits many academic interests and professional goals.

Academic excellence, pioneering research and innovation are primary reasons why students choose to attend Wayne State. Many of the university's 13 schools and colleges offer programs that are nationally ranked, and faculty are leaders in their field. Regardless of the program, students with a Wayne State education have a solid foundation to launch a successful career. More than 1,200 international students from 80 countries attend the university, which has a student gender breakdown of 60 percent female and 40 percent male. Wayne State awarded ‘Tree Campus Higher Education Institution' status

The university is proud to have recently secured a new tree campus status for its dedicated to urban forestry, creating a sustainable, beautiful and healthy place for learning and research. Wayne State offers students the chance to study across its 200-acre campus site, located in the centre of Midtown, where more than 1,300 individual trees can be found.

As well as creating shade and improving campus aesthetics, they have been shown to enhance student cognitive health and lower energy costs – making them an ideal addition to any leading university site.

Renovation of iconic State Hall building

From fall 2023, students at Wayne State will enjoy studying in an updated central building where modern classrooms and social spaces come together with enhanced support spaces and inclusive facilities. Originally built in 1947, State Hall defines the university. Now, after a USD 70 million facelift, it's ready to continue being a hub for inspiration and education for generations to come.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for admission onto a course at Wayne State differ considerably, based on the specific course applied to, as well as the level of study. With more than 350 undergraduate and postgraduate courses available there is a lot of variation, and prospective students are encouraged to visit the university website to view full details.

Regardless of the course applied to, students must meet the university's following English proficiency requirements to be admitted:

TOEFL iBT and IELTS: Minimum scores of 79-80 TOEFL iBT and IELTS 6.5 are required.

Duolingo English test: Minimum score of 110 undergraduate.

Students who don't meet the minimum English proficiency level for admission but who meet all other admission requirements are eligible for conditional admission to WSU through the English Language Institute (ELI).

The English Language Institute works with university departments to determine whether all other admission requirements have been met. If they are met, students can enrol in classes at the ELI where they study full time until meeting the university's English proficiency requirement.

Students who satisfactorily complete all Level 5 ELI courses or achieve the minimum required score on an English language proficiency exam will meet the general requirement for admission to WSU and receive admission to the intended academic degree program.

The university's Midtown Detroit campus covers 260 acres with more than 100 buildings. More than 300 labs are available across multiple disciplines for research, and Wayne State is continually upgrading and expanding teaching and learning spaces.

The STEM Innovation Learning Center (SILC), is a state-of-the-art STEM-focused academic centre, located in close proximity to Wayne State's chemistry, biology, engineering and physics buildings. It is designed to provide an interactive, technology-oriented learning environment, with a variety of cutting-edge spaces for experimentation, course delivery and collaboration. The centre boasts almost 100,000 square feet of adaptable classroom space, fully modernized computer labs, a maker space and 3D printing facilities.

The 200,000 square-foot Integrative Biosciences Center houses coordinated, multidisciplinary research teams and programmatic initiatives involving translational thrusts focused on pathophysiologies and accumulated stressors affecting health in evolving urban environments.

The Mort Harris Recreation and Fitness Center is free to all students in good standing. It includes a walking and running track, free weights, spinning group fitness studio, stationary bikes, recumbent bikes, rowing machines, multipurpose courts for basketball, volleyball and badminton, table tennis and a 30-foot climbing wall. The fitness center has men's and women's locker rooms and a women's only workout area.

Scholarships & funding

Wayne State is a diverse and inclusive university, with a commitment to providing fair access to its superb curriculum and services.

Tuition fees for most undergraduate academic programs ranges from USD 28,000 to USD 35,000 for the full year, and tuition in most graduate academic programs ranges from USD 27,000 to USD 32,000 for the full year.

Students also can expect to pay between USD 20,000 and USD 22,000 per academic year for living expenses such as housing, food and utilities.

Wayne State University offers more than USD 350 million in financial aid and scholarships each year, and qualified, first year (undergraduate) international students are eligible for some merit and departmental awards. Many scholarships at the undergraduate level do not require a separate application. These include the Warrior Award, valued at USD 6,000 per year for four years the Gold Award, valued at USD 4,000 per year for four years and the Green Award, valued at USD 2,500 per year for four years.

Incoming, first-year undergraduates can apply for the #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship, which allows recipients to study at WSU for the in-state tuition rate, a savings of more than USD 17,000 over the international student rate. The scholarship is open to students in all academic majors and fields of study, recognizing those with a vision for leadership and enhancing intercultural understanding. The application for this scholarship is February 15th for the upcoming academic year.

International students often qualify for merit awards from the university's schools, colleges and academic departments, as well as external organizations.

A limited number of graduate assistantships are offered to students enrolled in a master's or doctoral program. They provide a salary and a tuition scholarship, and are highly competitive. Each award is made at the program's discretion.
