Master of Science in Environmental Metrology and Policy

The mission of the M.S. in Environmental Metrology & Policy program at Georgetown is to offer students the best education and most rigorous professional training in an emerging interdisciplinary field as embodied by the program’s cross-cutting curriculum. It integrates organically the environmental metrology, i.e., measuring chemical pollutants and assessing their health risk, with developing and implementing the most appropriate environmental policies using the best available science. It will lay a solid intellectual and technical foundation for students to become a new type of leader or expert practitioner. Students will possess deep understanding of the intricacies in both environmental metrology and its critical role in developing and implementing all-encompassing environmental policies.

As such, students will become a new genre of leaders who will shape future environmental policies and laws by relying on the best available science and weighing the best available metrology data to an evidence-based policy decision-making. Graduates will be best equipped to become conscientious, dedicated and skillful stewards of the terrestrial environment for the betterment of the world. At its core, metrology is the science of measurement. Our program at Georgetown equips you with the skills to use metrology to address pressing environmental issues. We want you to become proficient in identifying and quantifying accurate and reliable legacy and emerging environmental pollutants so that impactful environmental policies can be crafted based on the soundest scientific evidence. This enhances the well-being of our planet. Together, we can work to solve the challenges posed by worsening chemical pollution that is further aggravated by climate change through the power of metrology.
