Bachelor of Science in Nutrition Science

Nutrition scientists study the components of food that may hold the key to living longer, healthier lives. Students in the major also examine food availability and safety in less industrialized parts of the world. Nutritionists and nutrition scientists work in research lab settings, food companies, health systems, public health organizations, nutrition education programs and nutrition policy. In addition, nutritionists educate people in healthy food choices, helping them manage and potentially prevent common diseases. You will begin with a series of foundation courses in natural science (focusing on biology and chemistry), social sciences and mathematics, as well as essential nutrition concepts. At the upper division level, you will choose a specialized major: nutritional biology or nutrition in public health. You will study more advanced topics in biology as well as courses relevant to your major. If you choose to major in clinical nutrition, you will be qualified to apply for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics accredited internship, enabling you to earn the Registered Dietitian credential necessary for work in a clinical setting. If you choose the nutrition in public health option, you will take additional course work in social and health-related sciences and gain experience in presenting nutritional concepts in a public service setting.

Nutrition, as it is taught on the Davis campus, is a biological science and requires a complete background in chemistry and biology, along with calculus and physics (nutritional biology option) or economics (nutrition in public health option). These courses are generally completed during the first two years, and along with biochemistry, must be completed before most nutrition classes can be taken. During their junior and senior years, students in the nutritional biology option take additional course work in biochemistry, physiology, and toxicology. Students in the nutrition in public health option take additional course work in social and health-related sciences.
