As the home to the Center for Biographical Research (est. 1988) and the internationally recognized journal Biography: An Interdisciplinary Quarterly (est. 1978), the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa is a premier destination for the study of life writing.
At both the undergraduate and graduate levels, the Department of English offers a variety of courses focusing on the critical study and composition of life writing (see Creative Writing to learn more about classes in autobiographical writing, creative nonfiction, and memoir). As the field of life writing has expanded its reach far beyond the traditional genres of autobiography, biography, and memoir, our study and teaching of life writing has become necessarily interdisciplinary. The life writing coursework at UH Mānoa often incorporates a wide range of life narratives, including biopics, autobiographical documentaries, graphic life narratives, visual art, testimonio, social media, and autoethnographies. We approach life narratives from different critical vantage points, examining the intersection of human rights discourse and life writing, for example, or exploring how new media and the Internet are transforming life narratives. Most significantly, given that life writing concerns are inevitably shaped by the specific environments in which they are created, Indigenous and decolonizing methodologies are central to the way we engage with life writing texts in Hawaiʻi and the Pacific.
Students at all levels have the opportunity to pursue critical or creative life writing projects under the supervision and mentorship of some of the world’s most renowned life writing scholars. Click here for a list of recent MA theses and PhD dissertations from UH Mānoa graduate students.
Beyond curriculum, the Center for Biographical Research also hosts the longest-running lecture series at UH Mānoa, the Brown Bag Biography talks, a weekly forum dedicated to life writing.

Entry requirements for 休士頓大學淨湖分校
Applicants to the Ph.D. program must hold or expect to hold prior to matriculation a Master’s degree in English or a closely related field.At minimum, the applicant needs to demonstrate above average academic performance (B average, usually a 3.0 on a 1.0-4.0 scale) for undergraduate course work and for any post-baccalaureate or graduate course work.
Transcripts from each postsecondary institution you have attended. Unofficial copies are acceptable for the admissions application, but admitted students must submit official transcripts in order to enroll at UHM.
Certain applicants may be required to submit the following items:
o Residency Declaration Form
o Proof of sufficient funding (international students only)
o Official TOEFL or IELTS exam scores (international students only)
GRE scores. Only the General Test (verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing sections) is required. For applicants who hold degrees in fields other than English, taking the Subject Test in Literature (in addition to the General Test) is
advisable. Upload your Test Taker’s Score Report to the Supplemental Documents Upload Website, we will use this to expedite our review process while we wait for ETS to report your official scores.
A Statement of Objectives. In evaluating applications, we place a great deal of weight on the statement, which is your chance to give the admissions committee a clear sense of why you want a doctoral degree in English, why you have chosen our program in particular, what you hope to gain from your studies, and what you hope to contribute to the discipline or profession. We recommend that you refer to our website to familiarize yourself with our program and the areas of specialization we offer. Your statement should be no longer than two single-spaced pages.
Three letters of recommendation, preferably from professors from whom you have recently taken courses in your field or who have directed you in independent research or in your thesis. These letters should assess your abilities and achievements, and they should evaluate your potential for success in our program
minimum TOEFL score of 500/61 (paper/internet) or IELTS overall band test result of 6.00 is required.
