Lehigh University requires that Ph.D. students complete 42 credits (if they hold Lehigh M.A.s) or 48 credits (if their M.A.s were awarded by other institutions). Ph.D. students generally should expect to take at least 8-9 courses or 24-27 semester hours of actual course work beyond the M.A. Students with Lehigh M.A.s must take at least 8 courses or 24 hours of actual coursework. Students who enter the Lehigh Ph.D. program with M.A. degrees from other institutions must take at least 9 courses or 27 credit hours of coursework, but they may be required to take additional distribution courses to ensure breadth of coverage. For the Ph.D. degree in English, the requirement is a reading knowledge of one foreign language, ordinarily French, German, Italian, Latin, or Spanish, although other languages may be allowed at the discretion of the graduate-studies coordinator, with whom students should consult as to the identity of the language. Students must meet the requirement before taking the general examination for the Ph.D. degree.

Entry requirements for 理海大學
The department admits to its doctoral program only students of proven competence and scholarly promise who hold a master’s degree. An average of 3.5 in course work presented for the M.A. in English and strong endorsements from the student's graduate instructors are minimum requirements for acceptance. We encourage applicants who have completed master's degrees in areas other than English to consult with the Director of Graduate Studies, who may advise that they apply to our M.A. program in order to gain a solid foundation in the discipline.

GRE General Test scores
a writing sample of at most 15-20 pages of non-fiction prose, preferably work written at the graduate level (e.g., a research paper or a chapter of the master’s thesis)
Ph.D. applicants must also provide a brief statement of their foreign language training
English language requirements
