Our graduate program offers a vibrant environment for the study of French as a native and second language (L2), French as a minority language (Louisiana French), and also minority languages in France (Picard, Breton, Occitan). French-specific training in syntax, semantics, morphology, and phonology provides a unique foundation in the nature of grammar and in its interactions with other systems of cognition. Our award-winning faculty offer strong expertise on many critical issues—social and dialectal variation, historical change, language contact and endangerment, and second language knowledge, production, and processing. We nourish students’ scholarly development and are proud of an excellent job placement record for Ph.D. graduates. Recent thesis topics range from Processing wh-Dependencies in L2 French to Phonology and the Prosodic Hierarchy in Picard.

THREE LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE - This statement should be 300-500 words.
Transcripts and/or diplomas are to be submitted both in the original language and translated from every postsecondary school you have attended, whether or not you have obtained a degree.
Graduate Record Examination scores should be sent to the department by ETS using the Institution code 1324 and Department code 2603. The College Graduate Office requires a minimum score of 151 of the verbal reasoning, a 153 on the quantitative reasoning, and a 4 on the analytical writing. Exceptions can be made in cases of particular merit. (Optional, please take the exam if possible)
TOEFL scores should be sent by the Educational Testing Service directly to the department. Photocopies are not acceptable. A score of at least 79 on the internet-based TOEFL, 550 on paper, and 213 on computer-based exam is required. IELTS Overall Band Score: 6.5,
