Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science- Biotechnology

Biotechnology is considered a support discipline and can be included in graduate programs in a variety of areas including physiology, nutrition, genetics/genomics and production management. Animal Science students can choose to include biotechnology courses as part of their plan of graduate work. Alternatively, students can choose a more formal route and specifically include a minor in Biotechnology in their graduate program. The biotechnology minor requires at least six hours of graduate-level biotechnology courses and a thesis research project in an area involving biotechnology.
A Ph.D. in Animal Science symbolizes a student?s ability to conduct high-level original research and scholarly work without supervision. The degree is granted upon the student?s demonstration of a comprehensive knowledge and scholarship in a specialized field of study. The student is required to write a dissertation reporting the results of an original investigation, pass a series of preliminary comprehensive examinations in the field of specialization and related areas of knowledge, and successfully defend the dissertation.
