Master of Arts in History- Modern Europe

The Modern Europe field at Stanford trains students in all aspects of the political, social, cultural, intellectual, diplomatic, and economic history of the continent and its empires, from the late-eighteenth to the twenty-first century. In the last decade, doctoral students have pursued research projects on themes including race and identity, political culture, gender and sexuality, migration, violence and humanitarianism, war and society, decolonization, and the Cold War. Recent PhDs in the field have secured tenure-track jobs at major research universities and small colleges, prestigious international postdoctoral fellowships, and professional jobs outside of academia. Faculty offer a range of core colloquia, research seminars, and directed readings. And all members of the field participate in a broad range of workshops and seminars on subjects related to national European histories, as well as the transnational and global impact of Europe in the modern world.
