Linguistics is the scientific study of language. Linguists investigate how language works, how patterns of sounds, words and sentences combine to convey meaning. Language is fundamental to nearly every aspect of human experience: how we communicate, our sense of identity, how we interact socially, how we think. Linguists explore all these areas and more. They study everyday language use, how it varies and changes geographically, socially and across time, and how children acquire language.
Even when they investigate specific languages, linguists are often trying to shed light on language in general. Some investigate how people acquire their knowledge about language and what this tells us about how the mind works. Many linguists investigate how languages vary across speakers, social groups and geographic regions, and some are involved in the documentation and maintenance of endangered languages. Some make computational models of speech and language based on collections of spoken and written language.

Leaving Certificate: H6/O2 in a language other than English or Irish
Advanced GCE (A Level): Grade D in a language other than English or Irish
GCSE: Grade A in a language other than English or Irish
International Baccalaureate: HL4/SL6 in a language other than English or Irish
Trinity College Dublin treats equally all Leaving Certificate and A-Level students on the island of Ireland in light of their status under Article 2 of the Constitution of Ireland. Trinity College will allocate fixed points to A-Level grades for the purpose of determining a student’s ranking, allocating places in proportion with current demographic factors.
International Baccalaureate
English A- 4 at Higher or Standard Level
English B or Ab initio: 4 at Higher Level or 6 at Standard Level (4 at either Level if presenting IB through English).
TOEFL
Internet based 90 (with a written score of 21).
University of Cambridge:
180+ on Cambridge English scale with no less than 175 in each skill and use of English i.e.
Proficiency Certificate, Grade C or better (CEFR Level C1 or C2)
Advanced Certificate, Grade C or better (CEFR Level C1 or C2)
IELTS
(Academic version) 6.5 (no individual band below 6)
Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE Academic:
a minimum score of 63 (with no section score below 59 in the Communicative Skills section).
Duolingo DET
Minimum overall score of 120/160 with no section score below 105.
For Dental courses and for Clinical Speech and Language Studies: overall score of 130/160 with no section score below 130.
International Baccalaureate
Minimum Entry Requirements
3 subjects at grade 5 at Higher Level and 3 subjects at grade 4 at Standard Level, to include English, mathematics and another language.
English, Mathematics and a second language, as well as three further subjects. A cumulative GPA of 3.2 or better (B+ average) unweighted.
English language requirements
