Doctor of Philosophy in Classical Archaeology

History and Classics, two of the original departments in what was then the Faculty of Arts and Sciences when the University of Alberta was founded in 1908, merged in 1994. Since then we have offered an increasingly interdisciplinary learning environment, with graduate training in history, archaeology, language, literature, and, most recently, ancient societies and cultures. Within that framework, students in both History and Classics streams can choose to focus in one of several Areas of Study. Reflecting the national and international reputation of its faculty, the Department boasts a number of recognized areas of excellence in research and attracts graduate students not only from Alberta and across Canada but also from overseas. Course requirements, language proficiency, and length of program for the PhD in Classical Archaeology depends to some extent on the student’s previous training and the student’s anticipated needs for the chosen area of specialization. Four to six years are normally required to complete the program. The minimum period of residence is two academic years of full-time attendance at the University of Alberta.Course work can normally be completed in one year, but for students deficient in a required language an additional year may be necessary.
