The ability of a cell to control its growth and differentiation potential in response to particular environmental or developmental cues is essential in determining its correct function. When a cell loses this ability for whatever reason, it may grow in an unregulated fashion, leading to tumor formation and cancer as one possibility, or alternatively to a variety of developmental defects and other diseases.
The department houses a large group of investigators whose programs impinge on these questions at many different levels, and whose research approaches range from the use of model organisms (particularly several mouse models) in both classical and reverse genetic analyses, through research with cultured cells and viral or environmental carcinogens, all the way to determining the structure of transcription factors and signaling complexes intimately involved in particular growth and development pathways.

Admission Requirements for the Doctoral Programs
Candidates for the doctoral program are expected to have a strong undergraduate background in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics with an overall GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.
GREs are not required, but highly recommended. We will waive the GRE requirement for applicants who demonstrate a strong record in relevant STEM courses such as organic chemistry, biochemistry, physical chemistry, molecular genetics, etc and have attained an overall GPA of >3.5. Resum? (or curriculum vitae) outlining your education and work career, publications, honors and awards, previous research activities etc.
One Page Biographical Essay that includes relevant information about your background, your reasons for applying to graduate school and your career aspirations.
Names and Addresses of Three References. Transcripts for all College Level Work. More information on the transcript requirement can be found below.
GRE Scores. As discussed above, GRE score are not required, but highly recommended. The minimum acceptable score on the TOEFL is 100 (Internet-based test), IELTS is 7
