The PhD in Urban Planning and Design is managed through collaboration between Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University and the University of Liverpool. Students in this programme are formally registered with the University of Liverpool as off-site postgraduate research students. Upon successful completion of the programme, you will receive a University of Liverpool-issued degree, which is recognised by China’s Ministry of Education.
The programme uses the theme of “sustainable revitalisation” to demonstrate its research value and impact. Our academic staff have a broad range of research interests and are happy to discuss possible research ideas. PhD students will undertake original research, advance scholarship, and generate new knowledge in the field.
The Design School aims to undertake research at the forefront of the discipline, and prepare graduates for future careers in academia and beyond. Graduates are expected to surpass known knowledge and become leaders in their research areas.
As a PhD student, you will carry out research at XJTLU under supervision. You will have a designated principal supervisor at XJTLU who is a full-time academic staff member. In addition, you will have a designated co-supervisor based at the University of Liverpool.
Pursuing a full-time PhD typically involves three years of conducting research and one year of writing a thesis, supported by subject-specific and general skills training and development. A full-time PhD student must submit their thesis within four years (or six years for part-time PhD students).

Entry requirements for 利物浦大學
The typical minimum entry requirement is a UK undergraduate (bachelors) degree with honours at a first or upper second class level in an appropriate field of study. Equivalent overseas degrees are also accepted. Applicants whose first language is not English or have not studied at degree level in English are required to provide evidence of proficiency in English. So, if you received your degree from a Chinese university, for example, and the teaching was not in English, proof of English language ability is needed. Applicants who have been awarded a bachelor or masters degree in English speaking countries (from the list defined by UKVI) within two years (from the date awarded the degree to the start date of PhD programme) are exempt from the English language requirement. Successful completion of the XJTLU/University of Liverpool degree programme at XJTLU taught in English medium satisfies the University’s English Language requirements. Please note this only valid for two years from the date awarded the degree to the start date of the PhD programme.
IELTS - 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each component). This is the minimum requirement for admission to the University and many of our PhD programmes (for example, arts and humanities, business and management) will require higher scores than this, and may also require higher specific grades in each of the sub-tests. Please note the IELTS certificate is only valid for 2 years. School or university transcripts, Degree certificates, Certificate of English language qualification (Valid IELTS certificate should be provided by applicants whose first language is not English or entry qualification is not English or entry qualification was not obtained in English. Entry qualification obtained from English speaking countries is valid for a maximum period of two years prior to the date of PhD registration)
