The emergence of communication as a multifaceted social science discipline is connected to both the search for new perspectives on contemporary problems and the profusion of technologies of communication. Our graduate program approaches communication as the primary social process through which social realities are constituted, maintained, and changed. Those varied processes and contexts constitute the core of our work, with opportunities to pursue communication theory and research in the following areas: Film studies, Media effects and popular culture, Media, technology, and society, Rhetoric and performance studies, Social interaction and culture.

Entry requirements for 麻州大學阿默斯特分校
The Department of Communication does not require grad school applicants to have an undergraduate major or MA in communication. Acceptance into the program is based primarily on general academic ability and interest in the areas of study within the department. Students with no background in the discipline are usually required to complete supplemental courses in addition to the minimum requirements for the PhD. PhD candidates must have a master's degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college or university.
Students are required to submit an explanation that address any grades falling below a letter grade B or a GPA of 3.0 by US standards.
The minimum scores are 550 for the paper-based TOEFL test and 80 for the computer-based TOEFL test, 6.5 for the IELTS
