Department structure

Department structure

TMUIC offers TMU first-year equivalent courses (University Transfer Program, UTP Stage II) to help students thrive in their studies and life in Canada. Upon successful completion of UTP II courses and obtaining the required GPA, students are guaranteed progression into the second year of studies at TMU.

There are seven programs at TMUIC:

Arts (BA)

TMU inspires students and researchers to address the hard questions facing society, guided by a deep commitment to equity and Indigenous education.

Business Management (BComm)

Students live and learn in the heart of Canada's business district while selecting a specific major to pursue the specialisation that best aligns with their interests.

Creative Industries (BA)

The program prepares students for management, leadership and entrepreneurship roles in the creative industries, learning how to develop and market creative ideas, understand distribution and legal agreements, technology, design thinking and more.

Engineering (BEng)

Students have the opportunity to make a significant positive impact in the world, from discovering green sources of energy, to finding new ways to combat disease, to developing more sustainable building systems and materials.

International Economics and Finance (BA)

Explore the interconnectedness of worldwide markets and acquire and cultivate the economic skills necessary to make strategic decisions from an informed global perspective.

Professional Communication (BA)

A flexible program that explores all aspects of communication including written, visual, auditory, digital and interpersonal. Experiment with diverse media, access the latest digital technologies and software, and learn how to engage with audiences across a diverse range of platforms.

Science (BSc)

A science degree opens up a wide landscape of possibilities, combining theoretical and practical work to broaden the horizon of scientific progress and understand more about the world.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Entry to UTP II usually requires successful completion of secondary school Year 12, or equivalent. Individual programs may have different entry requirements.

As instruction at the college is in English, students need to demonstrate a good level of English language proficiency. This can be done through results from an official English language test.

There are two levels of entry to a TMUIC programs: direct or integrated entry.

Direct entry

Students who meet the direct entry English language requirement and meet the relevant academic requirements for their country, will be eligible for direct entry to UTP Stage II. Direct entry includes a non-credit support course called Introduction to the TMUIC Learning Community (ILC101). This program is designed to be completed in three terms.

  • IELTS – overall score of 5.5 with no band lower than 5.0
  • TOEFL iBT – overall score of 69
  • Pearson Versant English Test (PVT) overall 50
  • Duolingo level of 95

Integrated Entry

Students who meet the integrated entry English language requirement and the relevant academic requirements for their country, will begin UTP Stage II and will take ILC101, two academic courses and two required integrated tutorials to support academic courses in their first term of study. This program is designed to be completed in three terms.

  • IELTS – overall score of 5.0 with no band lower than 4.5
  • TOEFL iBT – overall score of 60
  • Pearson Versant English Test (PVT) overall 46
  • Duolingo level of 85

Students with the following proficiency test results (or higher), are exempt from the Introduction to the TMUIC Learning Community course (ILC 101). This list of test results is not exhaustive.

  • IELTS 6.0 overall (with Reading and Writing minimum 5.5)
  • TOEFL 79 (minimum 18 in all bands)
  • Pearson Versant English Test (PVT) overall 61
  • Duolingo level of 100

Student success, advising & orientation

TMUIC students have access to comprehensive advising services to facilitate the transition to academics and life in Canada.

This comprehensive platform of resources ensures that students at TMUIC have every opportunity for success, establishing a strong foundation of confidence which they can carry on into their undergraduate studies at TMU. Students develop the study habits and skills needed to elevate their academic journey and achieve the goals set by their program, and also for themselves personally. This support system helps to build connections between international students and the university campus, which ultimately enrich the undergraduate experience.

TMUIC Orientation

Orientation is the beginning of each student's journey at Toronto Metropolitan University International College (TMUIC) - a new study environment, a new country, and a new way of life. It all starts at orientation.

This is a great way to meet many other students from around the world, while receiving crucial information about starting a university career.

At orientation, students will:

  • Attend campus tours (in-person and virtual)
  • Meet new friends before starting their studies
  • Discuss course scheduling and timetables
  • Receive orientation schedule and welcome pack

There will also be information sessions concerning visa status, dining services, campus accommodations, safety, health insurance, bank accounts and mobile plans all designed to help incoming international students settle into their new environment with comfort and confidence.

Upon successful completion of the UTP II course, and after obtaining the required GPA, TMUIC students are guaranteed progression into the second year of undergraduate studies at TMU, where they will experience a diverse and creative community enriched by a multitude of global perspectives.
