Develop the skills and knowledge to successfully face the practical challenges of English language teaching in a second language context. Using the latest research, this program investigates the theoretical basis of issues relating to applied linguistics and sociocultural contexts of education.
The Master of Education (TESOL) will develop your professional expertise and knowledge in the areas of applied linguistics and English language education whether you are, or are aspiring to become, an English language teacher of children, adolescents or adults.
The Master of Education (TESOL) is a postgraduate coursework degree that will develop your professional expertise and understanding in the areas of language education, and particularly in English language teaching to children, adolescents or adults.

You will complete core units in language teaching and learning, socio-cultural contexts of education, and language teaching and learning in second and foreign language contexts, along with a capstone experience comprising a semester-long special project or a year-long dissertation.

Additionally, you will complete a stream elective and postgraduate education units as needed to meet the requirements of the course.

Entry requirements for The University of Sydney

Admission to candidature for the Master of Education (TESOL) requires:

a bachelor's degree from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification and either a postgraduate English language teaching qualification or at least two yearsfull-time English language teaching experience, or
a bachelor's degree in English language teaching or equivalent qualification and at least one year's full-time English language teaching experience.
If you do not meet the requirements listed above for direct entry to the Master’s degree, you may be able to enter via a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in the same subject area and upgrade to the Master’s after successful completion of the shorter course.


IELTS score A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band
Toefl Pbt A minimum result of 565 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing
Toefl ibt A minimum result of 85 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing
