Studying in Australia as an international student can be an adventure of a lifetime, but there can always be unforeseen circumstances that might derail your everyday life.

This could include a medical emergency, a traffic accident, a mental breakdown, or even an incident of crime. You want to be fully prepared in case of an emergency so that you do not panic and contact the relevant authorities for attention and assistance!

6 Scenarios When Studying In Australia To Be Prepared For (And The Hotlines)

1. Encountering A Robbery, Burglary, Or Crime

No one wants to be a victim of crime, however, in the event that happens, here’s what you need to do. If you do encounter a crime or it is happening to you, at that very moment you should immediately dial ‘000’ to speak to the police.

This can include assault, attempted robbery or a break-in in progress. It is important to be swift and give the police all the necessary information.

However, if the suspect is gone or you just realized you are a victim, then call ‘131 444’ to make a non-urgent crime report.

2. Witnessing Or Encountering A Fire

If you are witnessing a fire or if it is happening to you, for example, if your apartment is on fire, then you want to dial ‘000’ immediately to contact the fire department.

You must exit the building or flee the area as soon as possible as smoke inhalation can also cause severe harm to you. If you can, try to safely help other people in the vicinity escape from the situation as well.

However, if you encounter a natural disaster, such as a bushfire, tsunami or earthquake and there’s damage done, you can call the States Emergency Service at ‘123 500’. They will be able to help with clearing the disaster zones and assisting any trapped or injured people relocate.

Once again, be sure to provide all the critical information, stay calm and speak clearly.

3. Having A Traffic Accident

Driving in Australia is especially popular, whether you are travelling down the highway to visit the breathtaking landscapes or touring the city getting from point A to point B. However, it is likely you might encounter a traffic accident.

Once again, if it is urgent or an emergency, immediately dial ‘000’ or call ‘131 444’ if it is a non-urgent case that needs reporting.

However, once that’s done, your vehicle still needs assistance. If it has broken down, you can call 13 11 11 for help from services such as the Automobile Association Of The Northern Territory (AANT) that will assist you with the necessary services such as towing.

But before you go, be sure to exchange insurance information if another party is involved in the accident.

4. Medical Emergency

If you are feeling under the weather, stressed or have suddenly fallen ill, it can be stressful especially so far away from home.
