Top Australian Universities in the QS World University Rankings 2024

The QS World University Rankings assessed 1,500 institutions worldwide based on the following metrics: academic reputation, citations per faculty, employer reputation, employer outcomes, faculty-student ratio, international faculty, sustainability, employment outcomes, and international research network.

Here are Australia’s top universities who made it to the top 20 in the QS World University Rankings for 2024:

1. The University of Melbourne

University of Melbourne

Australia’s second oldest (and Victoria’s oldest) university, The University of Melbourne, claims the 14th spot in the QS World Rankings.

The University of Melbourne is part of the Go8 and is made up of nine faculties and graduate schools: Architecture, Building and Planning, Arts, Business and Economics, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts and Music, Law, Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, Science, and Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences.

The University of Melbourne’s main campus is in Parkville, but it has several campuses spread across metropolitan Melbourne – Burnley, Hawthorn, Southbank and Werribee – and three campuses in Creswick, Dookie and Shepparton in regional Victoria. Each campus has its own faculty and specialization. This gives you freedom in organizing your living arrangements while in Melbourne, as well as coordinating your study, work, and social life.

2. The University of New South Wales

UNSW Sydney

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney secured the 19th spot in in the QS World Rankings. It was established in 1949 and is the second-youngest university in the Go8.

UNSW is made up of nine faculties: Art & Design, Art and Social Sciences, Built Environment, Business School, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science, and Canberra at ADFA (Australian Defence Force Academy). It houses around 59,000 students – around 35,000 of which are undergraduate students – and a research community of over 7,000 professionals.

UNSW also offers students a range of award-winning on and off-campus accommodation options, meaning you can live within walking distance of your classrooms and lecture halls while remaining in the thriving social hub of Kensington and close by Sydney CBD. Depending on the program you choose, you also can live by the beach in Coogee or in the very heart of Sydney.


3. The University of Sydney

University of Sydney

Tied with the University of New South Wales in the 19th spot, the University of Sydney is home to around 70,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, and offers a range of bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees.

Established in 1850, it is Australia’s oldest university and is made up of six faculties and three university schools: Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Sydney Business School, Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health, Faculty of Science, Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning, Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Sydney Law School.

The University of Sydney Library is the largest academic library in the southern hemisphere and is made up of 11 individual libraries. In 2007, the total library collection consisted of 5 million physical items and 300,000 ebooks. The University of Sydney has copies of extremely rare books, including the first edition of Isaac Newton’s Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica from 1687.
